The GOP begins to implode
Salon ^ | 2006/05/18 | Sidney Blumenthal

President Bush's nationally televised address on immigration Monday night was intended as a grand gesture to revive his collapsing presidency, but instead he has plunged the Republican Party into a political centrifuge that is breaking it down into its raw elements, which are colliding into each other, triggering explosions of unexpected and ever greater magnitude.

The nativist Republican base is at the throat of the business community. The Republican House of Representatives, in the grip of the far right, is at war with the Republican Senate. The evangelical religious right is paralyzed while the Roman Catholic Church has emerged as a mobilizing force behind the mass demonstrations of millions of Hispanic immigrants. Every effort Bush makes to hold a nonexistent Republican center is generating an opposing effect within his party.

Salon is a lefty mag and has an ideological axe to grind, but I think they are correct. There is going to be a housecleaning in the GOP. This could be great news for both the Constitution party and the Democrats.

That's about as far as I needed to read.

Anyway, a good shake-up is healthy (and needed) before 2008, at least.

A collapsing presidency? What, I wonder, is that, aside from yet another liberal pipe dream...

That's funny. That is exactly what I thought (and did). Reading an article about the GOP by Sidney Blumenthal is like reading an article on lasting marriage by Elizabeth Taylor.

Here in southern Indiana I am talking to many Republican Party members who are seriously seeking third party candidates. They are indeed fed up with President Bush's disingenuous treatment of the illegal immigration issue. I am also in that position. I have written no less than six letters on the subject to my elected representatives. Only Congressman Sodrel seems to have a grasp of it. President Bush is going along with those who want to destroy the European Judeo/Christian heritage of the United States.

The left thinks wishing will make it so.
There are a few maverick Republican Pols that have chosen to side with the left like Specter and Graham.

Republican base is at the throat of the business community.... House of Representatives...is at war with the Senate. ...religious right...the Roman Catholic Church has emerged as a mobilizing force behind the mass demonstrations of millions of Hispanic immigrants.

I don't have any confidence in the publication or the author but other than a lot of unnecessary qualifiers the basics seem to be correct. The President and his handlers don't seem to be listening. They have it backwards. It's dangerous for the administration to tell people what to think unless they have someone who can really handle it.

The worst thing is that the Demon_rats are so much in their own death spiral that Rove and Bush seem to be winning (as far as the next elections are concerned).

However, I join the nation in expressing my disgust over Bush's complete lack of leadership in securing our borders.

He seems only interested in making our boarders secure.

This article will explain to you why Bush is not listening to any of us, nor will he, on the immigration issue. Bush has no intentions of ever protecting our border. He has made a deal with Mexico behind our backs. "NORTH AMERICAN UNION" TO REPLACE THE USA?

The GOP begins to implode

Odds on to be the only truth in a Sidney Blumenthal article. Of course, he didn't write it.
