Eurovision in Athens on Saturday night
The 51st Eurovision song contest will be held at OAKA's Olympic indoor hall in Athens on Saturday night and will be broadcast live at 10 p.m. by state-run NET television station. Thousands of specators saw the rehearsals at the indoor hall and applauded all the participants, especially Greece's Anna Vissi who will sing "Everything".
The ten countries which qualified in Thursday night's semi-final were Bosnia-Herzegovina, Russia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Lithuania, Finland, Ukraine, Ireland, Sweden, Turkey and Armenia. Cyprus and Belgium, among others, were knocked out of the competition.
The ten best songs that were elected in Thursday's semi-final will compete in Saturday's final with the best top songs of last year's Eurovision, that is, Switzerland, Moldova, Israel, Latvia, Norway, Malta, Denmark, Romania, Croatia, the four major countries which traditionally participate in the competition - Spain, Germany, France and the United Kingdom - and Greece which won the Eurovision song contest in 2005.
Saturday night's final will be hosted by Greece's Eurovision 2004 third-place winner and pop heartthrob Sakis Rouvas ("Shake It") and Greek-American model, reporter and actress Maria Menounos.
The only justice in this ghastly event would be for Finland to win
Help me out. I'm clueless what this is about. Is it like American Idol?
It is a contest between the European nations as they send their best new artist to this event.
I believe Abba was one such group which won this event for Sweden a long time ago
After the the groups all perform, there's voting by telephone, you cannot vote for your own country, but instead people often vote for neighbors and culturally like countries. IE.: Greece and Cyprus always give each other maximum points.
The voting is halfway through - these guys are winning.
Celine Dion was the other Eurovision success story besides Abba.
That's right. What country did she represent? As European as Canada might be, it's not in the contest.
Switzerland, iirc.
Wow, that's the best they can offer?
And they won lol
Well yeah, they are more like "sisters" then neighbors. Greek and Cypriot singers have been singing for each other's countries for years now. Infact this year's Eurovision 2006 the singer who represented Greece was Greek Cypriot and the singer who was going to represent Cyprus, if she made the finals, was Greek. LoL!!
