She's buried in the infield at Belmont with her nose pointing to the finish line (sorry if I brought a tear to your eye again).

No, Monarchos won the Derby in 1:59 4/5

That was Sham's time, too. Well, he's tied for 2nd fastest Derby.

Hopefully Derek won't loose a shoe this time. He has glue-on shoes this time, AND he won't be carried out 9 wide on the far turn either.

As long as I can remember, I've always enjoyed reading. When I was a kid, I loved reading books about famous racehorses. I had one about Man O'War that I treasured. In addition to photos, it had a lengthy discussion of his pedigree going all the way back to the 18th century. To this day, without any effort, I can tell you that he was by Fair Play out of Mahubah by Rock Sand, and that one of his ancestors was a horse with the odd name of Pot-8-O's. :)

Hahaha I read that too!! He is a descendant of the Godolphin Arabian. I can't imagine a horse named Pot-8-o's in this day and age, course there are some wierd names out there.

Secretariat came around the turn and there weren't any other horses behind him! They showed up eventually.

Grin...yes, it sure seemed that all the other horses had somehow taken a wrong turn. All you could see was that gorgeous red horse running by himself. I still see it all in my mind's eye as if it were yesterday. Sigh.

I believe that Secretariat is a descendent of Eclipse, and that makes him a descendant of the Darley Arab.

Thanks for mentioning Sham, second fastest Derby ever, with Latiffe Pincay riding. Not many people know that.

You're welcome. In any other year, Sham would probably have become one of the greatest ever. He just had the misfortune of being born in the same year as a phenomenon the likes of which we may never see again -- at least not in our lifetimes.

The horse who finished (I think) 4th in that legendary Derby was Forego, the great gelding who went on to be Horse of the Year multiple times. Other champions defeated by Big Red included Riva Ridge, Cougar II, Kennedy Road and Tentam.

Do you remember Cañonero II, who held on to his Preakness record? That Triple Crown was wild.

I sure do. That was a fun TC year.

Pot-8-O's would make a great internet name.

This Poem is like me... The idea that all in attendance have a dream always brings a tear to my eye when I watch these preliminary background pieces...

One Man Watches a Horse Race

and suffers because his horse is losing. The second suffers because his
horse is winning; the race isn't over, and anything might happen. The
third who watches has no money on the race. He sees sweat foam on the
horses's leather, the rictus that flickers through the crowd. Sees even
himself at the rail, caught in the roiling world. He suffers for the
first man and the second, for human sight and horseflesh.

Still he comes to the races.
Should he stay away, pretend
that there is nothing here to do with him?

~Wendy Battin
