CAIRO, Egypt-- Jewish leaders, the Israeli government and chancelleries of free countries are scrambling to find out whether there is truth to a
report that Iran is readying a law that would require Jews and Christians and members of other minority religions to wear special identifying marks on their clothing.
On Friday, the Jewish Community's representative in Iran's parliament, known as the Majlis, Morris Mohtemed spoke with the secretary general of the Iranian American Jewish Federation in Los Angeles, Sam Kermanian, and told him the story reported by the National Post in Canada today was false. "We have not been able to confirm the accuracy of the report, nonetheless we are pursuing this issue with concern," Mr. Kermanian said in an interview with The New York Sun.

If untrue, I'll acknowledge the Iranian regeime, who's highest aspiration is the eradication of 5,000,000 Jews as evil.
If true, same thing.
Apologies to FR's Iranian defenders.

I can't imagine any Jews even being in Iran let alone living there.

I can't imagine anyone defends their government. I'll defend the people of Iran though, because these Jews and Christians happen to be Iranian (and I have many Jews and Christian Iranian friends.)

Is there really someone on FR who defends Iran??? On this issue, sure, it's not certain the law requires this. Irrelevant to me in acknowledging the nature of the regeime. Other threads.

Their government, no. Their people, yes. FR Iran-defenders want the Mullahs kicked out or killed and replaced with a democracy.

Me neither, but there appear to be - from the
CIA World Factbook:Religions: Shi'a Muslim 89%, Sunni Muslim 9%, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Baha'i 2%
In a country of 68 million that's maybe 1.4 million. I'm really hoping this story isn't true - on the one hand, it's so inflammatory that one has to doubt it on that level, but on the other this sort of badge is a tradition of dhimmitude and Ahmadinejad seems to be actively seeking the inflammatory of late.
An international community that will tolerate Darfur and Rwanda is, I am afraid, unlikely to do much more with this.

I doubt that you will find any defenders of the Iranian regime on Free Republic.
Iranians who want to free their country from the Mullahs? That's a different story. They're here and I wish them well.

I could swear there was an urban legend going around a 'net a few years ago about this very topic. But I did a search as www.snopes.com and I can't find any mention of it. Am I dreaming?
To: Javelina
Yes. That would be me. Middle-aged White, Roman Catholic woman who believes that God's Love and Jesus' Sacrifice is going to save us all.
Big believer in "God helps those who help themselves".
The Iranians are Persians and just happen to be Muslims. Sort of like Sunday Catholic mall rats, but with exquisite taste.
The Shah understood Iran, and they understood him. Jimmy The Balless didn't understand anything, and here we are...embassy takeover, Muslim enlightenment, Munich Massacre as World history, etc., The entire world has dealt with the Muslim Question for far too long. Now, the Iranians will have to fight off Crazy Mo on their own, Muslim against Muslim, and there is very little that the U.S. can do on it's own.
Iranians should know that the U.S. is being hamstrung by the totally corrupt U.N. located here in NYC. Be strong Be brave and only die for what really matters, FREEDOM. You may die, but your son may live in freedom. Our POTUS, GWB, spoke to you directly in his State of the Union Speech. We Stand With You, Iranians People, and our POTUS told you so...Take care and God bless, you are a courageous nation and we love you for it.
To: SJackson
Repeatedly, over the past 60 years, we've heard the cry, "Never again."
Nearly every time it's been put to the test, it has failed :(
Iran is a good case where "Never again." should be put to the test.

If this is true, Israel needs to step in and volunteer to pay for Iranian families to move to wherever they will be safe. No Jew is safe in Iran, at this point, and it's only a matter of time before the "cleansing" begins.

(Democrats: soulless minions of orthodoxy.)
The Pact of Umar in the Seventh Century is one of the origins of the requirement for dhimmis to wear distinctive clothing:
We shall not seek to resemble the Muslims by imitating any of their garments, the qalansuwa, the turban, footwear, or the parting of the hair. We shall always dress in the same way wherever we may be, and we shall bind the zunar round our waists.
We accept these conditions for ourselves and for the people of our community, and in return we receive safe-conduct.
Whether or not Iran actually imposed this requirement is almost beside the point. Such requirements have a long history in Muslim nations.
