We survived Germans, Dutch, Swedish, Italian etc with English intact, so why cant we survive Spanish?

Because multiculturalism wasn't a secular religion when European immigration was at its zenith. Now we pay homage to the "otherness" of other cultures, and many non-English speakers have no reason, nor are they expected, to speak English, whereas it was an absolute necessity for non-English speaking Europeans to learn, in order to advance economically and socially.

"Won't matter, the Bush haters got their AP story and will run with it, screaming presidente jorge until they turn blue."

As someone who supports President Bush in everything he does, from the excellent Campaign Finance Reform, to the doubling of the budget to $2.5 trillion, I can only say You Are So Right.

And what is this president jorge stuff anyway? I mean, it isn't like Bush represents any more than 25% of the Mexican Nation, who have migrated here to do jobs no Americans would do. Bush haters have made fools of themselves. Their paranoia that another 50 million illegals would be sucked over the border with the Bush guest worker program, leading to citizenship for illegals, is found on nothing more than the vague wording of the senate bill.

Fortunately, George Bush has already worked with the laws already on the books to seal the border tight, allowing in only a mere million or so wealthy and well educated illegals a year. Screaming "presidente jorge" is therefore absurd and an insult to right thinkers.

You'd think there was an invasion going on for how excited everyone gets. Ban the Bush haters! I think Dane should be the Lead Moderator.

I used the word official instead of national in error.

Thanks. A significant error. So the POTUS is actually on all sides on this one?

"He said Bush has instead long supported a concept called "English-Plus," believing that it was good to be proficient in more than one language."

IS BUSH REALLY PLANNING TO BECOME PROFICIENT IN ENGLISH/

Oh. So you must be part of the crowd that believes that Bush is some sort of numbskull. I can just hear the pitter patter of your little troll feet as they move along your keyboard.

...governing as a LEADER but as a MANAGER
That was Jerry Doyle other wise known as Michael Garibaldi from Babylon 5.

Of course Zathras would know that... but not Zathras.

Some B5 humor on a not so humorous thread.

In a few weeks, there won't be very many left standing.

Doesn't appear that matters, does it?

"The president has never supported making English the national language," Gonzales said after meeting with state and local officials in Texas to discuss cooperation on enforcement of immigration laws.

Well, that's a very clear direct quote. Even though it's Reuter's, I'd still be surprised that they'd make this up out of whole cloth.

"Golly? If he went to a St. Patrick's or Columbus Day parade does that mean he has a hidden agenda to sell us out to the Irish or the Italians? LOL"

You just don't get it do you?

When there was all the hoop-la a few weeks ago over the National Anthem being sung in Spanish, President Bush came out PUBLICLY saying the National Anthem SHOULD BE SUNG IN ENGLISH. He stuck his foot in his mouth when it was learned that HE HAD SUNG IT IN SPANISH HIMSELF.

Now if he would have come out saying the National Anthem should be sung with the ORIGINAL WORDS that was wrote for the Anthem and not the changes the Spanish Version made, he wouldn't have been putting his foot in his mouth, but he didn't say that.

From the drop off of posting on this thread, I get the feeling that the Borderbots are either regrouping, getting direction from the Source, or sulking toward their gloomy corner.

Is this a made-up quote?

Borderbots? I like that...

Rightly or wrongly, a lot of people have felt betrayed for awhile. This was the trigger.

Someone should tell Bush, either your with us or your against us. Us meaning the American people.

He's gotta stop giving our country away to criminals. Why the hell should we care what a criminal thinks?

That's not what I'm saying at all.

They need to be sent home and they can't come back until they fill out their stinking paperwork and come in properly. I don't care if they're from freakin England or Canada. If you're not going to follow procedure, you shouldn't be rewarded. If you're told we don't have room, then it's probably because we don't have the resources to handle you. If we do have the resources, then you can do what everybody else had to do and fill out your paperwork, pay your taxes, and compete for jobs under the same rules everybody else does.

This is not too much to ask. These are not refugees. These are people who don't want to follow the rules.
