Hastert hot over CIA chief's firing [goes off on Cheney]
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | May 18, 2006 | Robert Novak

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, a 64-year-old ex-high school wrestling coach, ordinarily is not a shouter. But according to Capitol Hill sources, he engaged in a high-decibel rant last week when he met with Vice President Dick Cheney. The speaker was enraged by the sacking of his friend and former colleague, Porter Goss.

Hastert was so vituperative that a private session with President Bush in the living quarters of the White House was scheduled immediately (although Hastert aides said the meeting had been planned previously). The speaker toned down his volume on the hallowed ground and did more listening than talking. But the president did not slake Hastert's wrath over the abrupt sacking of Goss as CIA director.

That wrath reflects the feeling in the House Republican cloakroom that Goss, who gave up a safe congressional seat from Florida for a thankless cleanup mission at the CIA, is being made a scapegoat for the government's intelligence mess. But Hastert's discontent goes beyond the CIA. The GOP mood on Capitol Hill, particularly the House, is poisonous. With pessimism rising over a contemplated loss of their majority in the 2006 elections, Republican lawmakers blame their parlous condition on Bush's performance.

I find it very difficult to believe Hastert can get hot over anything...he's been asleep in the House for how long now?

I hope he keeps that anger when he appoints the House members of the immigration bill reconciliation committee.

You gonna let Bush and Rove get their way on immigration after stiffing you on the Goss issue, Hastert?

Amen. If he had the passion for closing the border that he has for his friend getting sacked we'd be there by now.

"Save your anger for the Shamnesty bill Hastert!"

Hey, whatever gets Hastert worked up against Rove/Bush is fine with me. I couldn't care less about the Goss issue, but I'd support folks carrying signs saying "Goss must be avenged" outside Hastert's office when it comes time to deal with the immigration bill.

They blame Bush? If those jackasses weren't spending money like drunken sailors we'd be a lot better off. Granted that Bush hasn't used the veto but these guys have no room to talk.

With pessimism rising over a contemplated loss of their majority in the 2006 elections, Republican lawmakers blame their parlous condition on Bush's performance.

If they would pay attention, they would see their own polls are lower than the Pres. The gop led house and senate are just as responsible, if not more so, than the pres for their mess. They have been nearly as effective at undermining the Pres on many issues as the dims. Screw em all.

Just another post to prove every thread on FR these days is an immigration thread, and a Bush Bash festival.

"A president waging a global war against terror can hardly function with an intelligence agency whose employees make off-the-record speeches against his policies, contribute to his political opponents and leak secrets to the news media."

Sounds like Novak is jealous he isn't getting these any more. I suspect no one trusts him after he leaked about Plame though told not to by his sources.

When will he tell us who his first source is?

I wish these "offended" Republicans will get just as upset and vent their anger at Dimocraps for the sake of our country as much as they seem to get upset at their personal standings.

Sure GOP, place the blame on Bush. You guys are the ones who submitted legislation to him to sign. Look in the mirror. It's a whole lot of your own fault.

Show me another issue today that will result in the US becoming a much poorer and less educated nation with a divided culture in a few decades and I'll be all over it.

Until then I'm going to be all over immigration rather than gay marriage or Schiavo or whatever other comparatively irrelevant issues the RINOs in Congress want to distract us with.

Mr. Goss, there is a US Senate seat available for any Republican who knows how to win statewide elections in Florida.

Please take over that weirdo astronaut's seat

Let's hope your right.

ONLY if the Republican Majority in Congress can take the popular position on the illegal invader issue, the Administration be damned, can they hope to survive the anticipated backlash against the President - a situation so uncredible and unprecedented as to be nearly unique in American History. Bush went from being one of the most popular Presidents in history to one of the least popular simply becasue he allowed himslef to be sandbagged by the Dems - just like his father - and becasue he alienated his base on critical issues.

My own take is Bush simply doesn't care what happens after he leaves office - but if the Dems take over Congress in 2006, he may leave sooner than he thinks - which would not be good for the war on terror regardless of his insane border policies.

Well...it's going to become a self fulfilling prophecy if the alarmist dissention puts the Democrats in office.

U won't have a country to worry about.

Remember the Peter Principle, where everyone rises to his level of incompetence? Hastert should have remained a high school wrestling coach. He's in way over his head.
