PORT HARDY - Are you seeing red?
That might be because a campaign is afoot to wear red on Fridays to show support for Canadian troops in Afghanistan.
The 101 Squadron in Port Hardy has brought the idea to the North Island, but it was initiated by a number of Canadian military family support groups, says Robert Hemphill, who is president of 101 Squadron, which is part of 888 Wing (Comox) of the Air Force Association of Canada.
"This is not necessarily to show support for the political reasoning behind Canadian Forces being there, but to show our men and women in uniform that we respect them and value their sacrifices," says Hemphill in an email.
Hemphill says the squadron will also be selling red maple leaf pins to support the troops. Funds raised will be used to purchase items for the troops to give out to people in Afghanistan as a goodwill gesture.
"Our Red Maple Leaf campaign is another effort to show our support," reiterates Hemphill.
The pins are available from 101 Squadron members for $5 each.
Why not, Mr. Hemphill? Explain yourself.
Start with being nice then show support for the mission, I guess.
Or as a bumper sticker I saw on an Army Mom's SUV read - "If you are not behind our troops, get in front of them"
