Give the populace a new show and a new story every day. Most people have neither the interest, inclination, or leisure to carefully follow events and think about potential mid and long range consequences. This has been really magnified by the electronic media. So keep the boobs bemused. Make your story simple and easy to follow and spice it with enough soap opera schmaltz to grab shallow emotions. It worked unfortunately it also gave us a massively disorganized national security structure, probable large scale penetration of US defense agencies and technology base by China and an intel capability that is gutted and will take many many years to repair.
