....... a stunning 83-16 in favor of a reinforced fence along the Mexico border yesterday....showed that lawmakers are feeling get-tough winds blowing from the grass roots.
Even 2008 presidential prospects like Sens. Clinton and Kerry voted for the 370-mile fence, and several Democrats who first voted no switched nervously to yes.
"Voters are very clear that they want the situation at the border addressed first," said independent pollster Scott Rasmussen, who's found huge enforcement-first majorities in 33 states he polled. "The real debate isn't about what to do with the illegal aliens who are already here," Rasmussen said. "It's about what to do to keep more from coming here."
.....the Republican base is livid as Bush snuggles up to liberal Ted Kennedy - a big advocate of legalizing illegal aliens....."When you get into bed with Ted Kennedy, you get more than a good night's sleep," fumed a Florida lawmaker.............

House members are simply not as insular, nor as drunk, as most US Senators. Probably a difference in heavy narcotics use too.

They are Mexican. Jeb Bush met his wife, Columba, while teaching English in Leon, Guanajato, Mexico in 1971. (Columba was born in Leon in 1954.) The two were were married on 23 February 1974, shortly after Bush graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Latin American Affairs.

I don't think a full, unbroken wall is necessary to do the job. There are parts of Arizona, near Yuma, where the desert is its own wall, so long as pro-immigrant nuts don't set up "water stations." And it's impossible to hide there. We're talking "Lawrence of Arabia" type sand dunes.

No, "W"'s sister in law is Mexican. Otherwise I don't think we'd see such a decided pro-Mexican preference built into his legislative proposal and the Senate's version.
She's gotta' be a regular dish tosser or somethin' ~ remember, this ol'gal is the mother of the Bush family's crack addict.

You are phrasing it correctly.
Anti-amnesty or anti-invasion.
Pro-amnesty or pro-invasion.
Many Americans fully understand that this invasion has so much downside now, and will have catastrophic economic effects in the future. And we have heard the rhetoric of their radicals, and we are heeding it. "We will take over either by voting or by violence." A nation's people understand that they are being threatened with so much - unemployment, lower standard of living, crime, backbreaking taxes because of a burgeoning illiterate population, racist violence, loss of liberty, and loss of civil rights to name a few. The voters understand what the politicians don't, and the voters are scared and angry.

instead of 2025, how about building the whole fence, now? yes, this is better than nothing, but I hope it doesn't take 20 more years

All that is true IF the people they expect at the polls----party regulars, single issue voters, and the like, turn out at the polls.
If people are energized to vote that the pols didn't expect would vote, they know they got troubles.
Anti-amnesty might be such as issue.

Although there are plenty of folks making a killing off hiring illegal alien labor, the cold, hard facts are that in many industries most of the savings are passed on to the purchasers in the form of lower prices.
In the aggregate, illegal alien labor paid at less than the normal rate provides deflationary pressure on the economy and keeps prices steady.

As you have explained in your post, they made a lot of noise and promises amid much fanfare and public bluster. In the end they did nothing. It happened then, and it will happen now.

Exactly. The key question to me is where are we building this, and who can we line up to keep slipping another 100 miles or so of wall into every year's budgetary appropriation.

Senators are unable to understand this. My own, Senator Warner, is simply not listening to the facts. Right in central Springfield Virginia we've had THREE (3) American citizens murdered by illegal aliens with baseball bats in recent years.
Warner simply does not care.
