Dick Morris: Build a Wall, Allow Guest Workers

This ethnic group, by far the fastest growing in our nation, will likely tip one way or the other as a result of what happens in Washington this year and next. With the Hispanic vote expected to top 20 percent by 2020, the resulting collective decision of the Latino community could be the most important factor in the future of America's political parties.

Some Republicans feel squeezed between the demands of their right-wing base and their desire to appeal to Hispanic voters. But they need not make a choice. They can have their cake and eat it too.

Liberals want the guest workers, and conservatives want the wall.

Make a deal.

Give them both what they want. The president or, failing that, the Republican Party in Congress needs to put together a package that delivers both. The political impact of such a move would be sensational.

It would do more to build a link between the GOP and the Latino vote than any other policy decision. It could lead to a realignment of the political loyalties of the Hispanic community.

This could be reversed but would take a bold stroke. Regardless of what you read there are plenty of Europeans who would like to immigrate to the US, most of them very well educated. Right now if you are a German and you want to immigrate legally - good luck. Here's a two step program:

1.) Wall up the Mexican border.

2.) Allow any European without a criminal record immediate legal residency.

#2 would have to very finely tuned to keep the Muslims out without actually saying so, perhaps by allowing only Europeans who could prove ancestral residency in their country of origin back to 1966 or whenever it was that Ted Kennedy closed off immigration for Europeans.

Yep, to me this is a no brainer. I think Dick Morris hits it right on the head. One point I always here is that everyone thinks all these illegals are going to be DEMS. I just dont see that. On the Senate bill its looks like to me that these people got to be working, keep their nose claen, pay back taxes, learn English and 11 years later they get to become a citizen. A person that does that sounds like a likely Republican voter to me.

In 2004 Bush won New Mexico by around 6 thousand votes. He won Iowa by 10,000 votes. He lost Wisconsin by 10,000. Both New Mexico and Iowa are places were illegals go to. Do you honestly think that the illegals won't at least give the Dem's a 16000 pick up?

Listen up, 12-20 million new voters who are poor, will make it IMPOSSIBLE for another republican president to win. This isn't fear mongering. The most generous estimates are that bush got 40% of the Hispanic vote, which includes puerto ricans and cubans who won't be the majority of amnesty seekers. So 40% of 12 million is 4.8 million, and the dems would gain 7.2 million. Thats 2.4 instant net democratic voters, assuming the lowest number of illegals, and the most generous number of Hispanic republican voters.

By abandoning the republican party to prevent amnesty, you are really saving them from themselves.

This Hispanic voter IS part of their right wing base, as are other American Hispanics. All they're doing is ticking me and other law-abiding Americans off. This appeasement/amnesty attempt by the President and the Senate is an insult to intelligent people everywhere. I don't want to see DemonRats in office and will not vote for one in November. That being said, I'm hoping that somehow, somewhere there will be REAL conservatives running for office. I'm sick of RINO's. I'm sick of our elected officials forgetting that in this constitutional republic, they work for us and not the other way around.

Well New Mexico and Iowa are hard states. Bush lost both of those States in 2000. It just seems as if the Hispanic vote is trending Republican and like Morris says this might be an opportunity for Repubs here. This issue has to be handled delicately regardless

This whole issue boils down to votes. My gosh, we are talking about our nation here, our culture, our quality of life and the future of our children and grandchildren. If our representatives only concern is votes are country is lost. It is beyond me that these folks aren't embarrassed by the pandering. The goverment has grown too big to be effective. They keep enacting laws but they don't require any to be enforced except if it involves taking more of our money. It's disgusting. I need the votes, to hell with everyone else.

This Puerto Rican is also a part of the Conservative Republican base, I wish all those that assume that because your are Hispanic you think alike. The differences and attitudes from one Hispanic of one country towards another from some other country would surprise those that are not aware of it.
