There is a Conspiracy Theory that says NAFTA + CAFTA=FTAA,which eventually will morph into the American Union. Open borders throughout the Americas is part of this plan-hence the longterm unwillingness to deal with the US/MX border issue, as elites in BOTH parties are on board with this plan. That the prospective members of the FTAA showed tepid interest at best in the Miami "summit" last year hasn't ended speculation along these lines. (Frankly, I am (reluctantly) leaning towards this theory-and if it's true, telling the republicans that they'll lose congress and the WH is irrelevant : They're already looking forward to the day in the near future when, as in the EU, the "right sort of people" can be given the power they deserve without having to suffer the humiliation of begging the hoi poloi for votes.)

Great summary. Yeah, I'm for the most part familiar with that, but one would think that they can see through the shortcomings of that approach.

Europe is Europe. The countries in Western Europe are all westernized, modern, and economically relevant.

Mexico is third world for the most part and has a host of other issues. It is tantamount to Europe having included Germany, France, Somalia, and Sudan, and then forming an economic union of sorts. In essence the EU more or less did that indirectly as since the borders are open throughout the EU, there is now a direct flow from muslim nations primarily, but largely nations that are more third world than non, and that's causing problems over there in a similar fashion to what we'll be able to expect.
