Call for video of Mex soccer fans chanting "Osama" when playing the US

February 15, 1998 in Los Angeles, USA - "During a game between the US and Mexico February 15, the US soccer team was not only booed and jeered throughout the entire game by Mexican fans, but were continually pelted with water, beer and in some cases solid objects like fruit from the over 60,000 fans in attendance.

One player was hit during with a water balloon during a corner kick attempt. As the team left the field at the end of both halves, beer and other debris rained down on them as they tried to run through the tunnel to their locker room. Mexico's fans in the end got the best of Uncle Sam as the Mexican national team defeated the US, 1-0.

This type of behavior is nothing new in Mexico, England, most of Europe, or any other Latin American countries. Home nations make it a matter of habit to act like idiots to visiting teams, and this incident was no different; except that it happened in Los Angeles, California!

Now, the rivalry between these two national teams has become pretty heated as the US has become a somewhat meager soccer power of sorts, but what happened in this case is completely inexcusable because it happened on America's own soil."

February 5, 2004 in Zapopan, Mexico "Last Thursday, when the U.S. played Canada in a qualifying round in Zapopan before 1,500 Mexicans, the crowd hooted "The Star-Spangled Banner," it booed U.S. goals. And it chanted "Osama! Osama! Osama" as the American players left the field with a 2-0 victory."

February 10, 2004 in Guadalajara, Mexico "In the 26th minute, the throng began chanting 'Osama! Osama!' at the Americans, but they appeared inured to such taunting and eager for a game of beautiful desperation in an attempt to reach the Olympics."

March 27, 2005 in Mexico City, Mexico "There was some booing and whistling during 'The Star-Spangled Banner' but the Americans expected worse. After the game, about 100 people gathered for a peaceful celebration near Mexico City's Angel of Independence monument. A few first tried to burn, then trampled a small American flag while chanting 'Osama! Osama!'"

Does anyone have video of soccer matches where Mexican fans have chanted "Osama"?

What are you trying to imply, that Mexican sports fans have bad taste, or do you actually believe that there exists a strong sentiment of support for Al Qaeda in Mexico? If it's the former, you're absolutely correct. If it's the latter, you're off your rocker.

I think there was also a soccer match in Los Angeles where Mexicans chanted "Osama," but I can't find any links.

It's not like the Germans don't do nazi salutes at the French football teams.

Soccer is a bloodsport in most countries, literally.

People are killed.

I'm trying to imply that there is a pathological case of anti-Americanism among some Mexicans. How prevalent that is is open to discussion, but I find it alarming that the chanting of "Osama" has happened multiple times, and that abuse is heaped on US fans even in Los Angeles.

What kind of football (ahem, not soccer!) match would it be if you didn't hurl abuse at the opposing fans? I think you're missing the whole point here!

Undoubtedly. But how much do you think it compares to anti-Mexicanism about some Americans? Anyway, millions of Mexicans want to become American citizens -- that hardly seems like anti-US hatred.

More so than other tasteless sports rivalries?

"Anyway, millions of Mexicans want to become American citizens -- that hardly seems like anti-US hatred."

Do they really? Or do they just want to take advantage of our economy, our healthcare system, our educational system and so on. They want what we have but I haven't seen that they are willing to become americans, at least not like a traditional immigrant.

There's a pathological case of anti-Americanism among some Americans, too.

BTW, Mexican-Americans, many of them described here as "anchor babies," are serving in the US military in greater numbers than their proportion of the population at large.

I guess they're just fighting the wars Americans don't want to fight.

I do not believe there is strong pro-Al Qaeda support with the majority of Mexicans, in Mexico or the USA.

This was not IN Mexico. This happened IN Los Angeles. So, one can logically presume there are strong anti-American Mexicans living in Los Angeles and other US cities. It is not much of a stretch to believe there are anti-Americans living in Mexico as well.

It would seem to be a hard case to make that Mexico is an American ally, or an ally of other free nations. Mexico is corrupt within her socialistic and fascist politics. If Mexico were to use half the effort on her northern border that Mexico uses on her southern border, the US would not have the problems we have with illegal aliens.

More so than other tasteless sports rivalries? Call me crazy, but chanting the name of the leader of a terrorist group that perpetrated the largest terror attack on America goes beyond being tasteless. I'm looking forward to seeing links posted of Americans being that disrespectful. Of course, sports matches are often heated and there's abuse and jibes, but chanting "Osama" takes it to a different level.
