Ecuador sends military to guard oil facilities seized from Occidental

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Ecuadorean President Alfredo Palacio sent troops to guard oil facilities seized from Occidental Petroleum Corp. as they are transferred to state control, officials said Tuesday.

But officials said the cancellation of Occidental's operating contracts and the seizure of its assets did not mean the Andean nation is nationalizing its oil industry.

The Bush administration responded to the measure by breaking off negotiations on a free trade agreement with Ecuador.

Armand Hammer, the founder of Occidental, was a Commie loving @#$%&*, and was in fact a big fan of Joe Stalin. He died and went to hell in 1990. I doubt that there are any remnants of Hammer's reign left at Oxy today.

I was thinking that was the case and was scrolling through looking for someone to comment that Al Gore's family owned a lot of Occidental. Wonder if that is still the case. If so....GOODY!

I agree.

When using a derogatory term aimed at an audience, one should not be surprised to find the intended point is not getting across.

I find it an interesting exercise to substitute the literal (or intended figurative) definition of a word into a sentence to see how that affects the communication of a thought. In this case:

"...Presidente Jorge Arbusto is acting decisively to protect US oil interests, but can't quite claim the same with regard to the borders of his own country? Is it sinking in yet Bushbots you idiotic, stupid, unthinking, moronic, intellectually deprived, easily led sheeple?"

Perhaps Rockit didn't intend to use it that way, but that is the common meaning of the term, at least on Free Republic (and I would guess, DU).

I've actually met the grandson, Armie, here in LA. He likes to play guitar. ;o)

Hopefully not, but sometimes coorporate culture is pretty stagnant.

Of coure, the boards of most other large corporations seem to have caught up with Hammer's way of thinking.

One of the biggest black eyes the Bush legacy will have is the way we fell asleep while Chavez turned Latin America communist/socialist. Why do we wake up only after disaster strikes?

What should Bush have done?

4.) Track every single green-card holding person, with implanted chips under their skin, if necessary. Tax their income. If they have a problem with taxation without representation, tell them it is their choice to come work here. Take it or leave it. Go work in your native country if you don't like it.

Why exactly should my WIFE have to pay extra taxes just because we decided to live here?

Ecuador is committing suicide. Their own state oil company can't maintain production or pay its own workers and contractors, despite the fact that it reserves for itself the choicest oil properties.

Ecuador is completely dependent upon the taxes and royalties paid by private oil companies, who generate most of Ecuador's income despite the fact that they are only allowed to bid on lower quality oil fields.

Under pressure by leftist political action groups, and riddled from within by Chavists, the government has sought to relieve the pressure by striking out at its main source of income. It won't work, though. Once the Chavists smell blood in the water, they will only grow more aggressive, not less so.

He has done considerably more in addressing the border situation and has been working on it for months.

Same BS, different day.

That's how I thought you would respond. All attitude, no substance.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Seriously, though... the guy's name is Armand Hammer?

"Arm & Hammer"... that's a bummer.

Hi Centurion2000...

I am not saying a green card holder should pay EXTRA taxes, just that every person who is in this country under a green card and who earns money SHOULD pay taxes as if they were a citizen. My feeling is, they use the roads, drink the water, go to the hospital, maybe have kids in school and so on, so they should pay in.

If someone is a spouse, staying at home raising the kids but not bringing home money, then no, they shouldn't be made to pay. Didn't mean to imply that.

I actually laid out what I had to say in post #47 and it went completely over your head at Mach 25.

His parents were activists in the US Communist Party. They chose the name Armand specifically to be a play on words for socialist symbolism of the time.

Arm and Hammer baking soda actually predates communism, but was bought by Armand just because he like the association. Occidental sold it after he died.
