I suspect that what he said last night and what many people thought he said last night are two different things.
A classic example would be his comment that he "doesn't favor granting automatic citizenship to illegals."
People who haven't been following the debate closely might take this to mean that the President does not favor amnesty. in reality, it means that he favors granting citizenship to illegals if they jump through a few simple hoops...which is, essentially amnesty.
I've gone over the speech twice now, and with each reading the Clintonisms become more clear.
