There are 19,000 United States troops protecting the border of Iraq right now. There are thousands still protecting the border of West Germany, even though the nations merged what seems long ago. There are thousands protecting the border of South Korea from the north.

Why is it so hard for the American people to get that same level of protection at home?

Because it is illegal to use troops for law enforcrement in the US.
