It's not criminal yet. Undocumented immigration is a civil violation punishable by deportation, not by prison or fine. Hence, the contraversy surrounding the proposal to turn it into a felony.

Although I am a avid supporter of closing our borders and deporting all "illegals' it would be disingenuous to state that all the illegal immigrants that came here were criminals....
Both the US government and Mexican government has encouraged this cross border economic immigration through their direct and indirect actions.....Not to mention the US businessess......
The majority of the "folks" I've run into from south of the border have been friendly, trustworthy and kind. Unfortunately for them, the situation has gotten out of control at the border and all sorts of riffraff (M-13, etc.)are flowing into this nation.
We must assert control and as a result, a lot of decent people will be hurt economically and socially.
