Mexicans irritated by Bush's plan for border troops
Seattle Times ^ | 16 May 2006 | Hugh Dellios

Mexicans chafed Monday at the notion that President Bush wants to send National Guard troops to help enforce the U.S.-Mexico border, even as President Vicente Fox tried to downplay the seriousness of the move.

[. . .]

"It's worrying," said Arturo Solis, an immigrant-rights activist in Reynosa, across the border from McAllen, Texas. "The bad thing is that the American government is insisting on confusing immigration with a criminal problem."

The move reminded some historians of 1913, when President William Taft sent troops to the Texas border. Mexico was in the midst of a chaotic revolution, and Taft was warning Mexican generals and rebels not to harm U.S. interests south of the border.

The U.S. Army invaded Mexico in 1916 after revolutionary Pancho Villa and his men raided the border town of Columbus, N.M.

[. . .]

Some criticized Fox for appearing to acquiesce to Bush's Guard plan. Some saw an ulterior motive — that Fox wants to help Bush persuade Congress to pass a wider immigration overhaul before Mexico's July 2 presidential election, which would allow Fox to claim success and help his party's candidate, Felipe Calderon.

God forbid we do anything to irritate Mexicans, terrify Euroweenies, or offend Muslims. Just keep putting the screws to the American citizens.

I'll bet if the Mexican border was up at Kennebunkport, this crap WOULD NOT be happening.

I could give a flying bleep what the denizens of that awful nation think. They're damn lucky they've gotten way with what they have. It's an outrage! Since when does a rotten 3rd world nation tell us what to do? ANSWER: Since George Bush got in. His actions have only encouraged this corrupt black hole of the universe. WE have been invaded ... all part of GW's game plan to present the American people with a mass of 20 million illegal aliens who are impossible to deport. I damn the traitorous leaders in DC who spit daily on our precious national sovereignty. I've never been so mad

Because the corrupt structure of Mexico, wherein all wealth is held in a very few hands, depends on oil revenue and remittances (send money home) to operate the government.

Someone forgot to consult the Department of Mexican Relations before making this decision. I'm sure Secretary Fox would never have allowed it had he known about it beforehand.

I am beginning to suspect that it is only the "safety valve" of shipping millions of poor Mexicans to the United States that keeps Mexico from another revolution. The corruption can continue, and those that steal from government coffers can continue to do so, because there is no incentive to improve the operation of the economy with millions of working-age men and women missing.

BenLurkin;

Although I am a avid supporter of closing our borders and deporting all "illegals' it would be disingenuous to state that all the illegal immigrants that came here were criminals....

Both the US government and Mexican government has encouraged this cross border economic immigration through their direct and indirect actions.....Not to mention the US businessess......

The majority of the "folks" I've run into from south of the border have been friendly, trustworthy and kind. Unfortunately for them, the situation has gotten out of control at the border and all sorts of riffraff (M-13, etc.)are flowing into this nation.

We must assert control and as a result, a lot of decent people will be hurt economically and socially.

The BUSH compound is in Kennebunkport, Maine. The Kennedy compound is in Hyannisport, Mass.

I know it's easy to get them confused, since soooo many of them work for the government, and politically are very similar. The main difference is most of the Bush clan is employable in private enterprise, while the pickings are slim with the Kennedy's

Just how long will it take for someone on the south side of the border to take a shot(s) at one of the guardsmen?

I ams betting less than a week!

But! Will it be reported?

It's good you cleared that up. I didn't even register the Kennebunkport. I just saw Teddy on his backlawn, having a cocktail, and "aiming". LOL.

ILLEGAL immigration IS criminal, Arturo. You're the confused one in this equation.

I'm amazed that so many Freepers see no problem with importing 10-50 million like minded "immigrants."

Do not worry, it is only temporary:

White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri said Bush made clear to Fox in the morning telephone conversation that "the United States considered Mexico a friend and that what is being considered is not militarization of the border, but support of border capabilities on a temporary basis by the National Guard."

I'm sorry if this comes across the wrong way, but are the majority of Mexicans this stupid? How on Earth do you make a statement like this and not catch how foolish you sound?

Unfortunately, there are many Americans saying the same thing.
