i don't think that any president would get away with federalizing the troops in such a manner.

Dubya's solution is the same today as it was yesterday:

Legalize the illegal actions of tens of millions of lawless invaders and their enablers.

But don't worry! This total abregation of the rule of law and of American sovereignty will be "secure, orderly and fair"! /sarcasm

not true, there have been more US citizens born on US soil than there have been citizens who were born elsewhere and immigrated, almost 95% to 5%.

There it is. That's the line I've been wanting to see. I've so sick and tired of that moronic "we're a nation of immigrants" line. Save a region of Africa, every single nation on earth is, and that line is hardly a distinguishing or noble feature of our nation. Our country has a unique relationship to immigration in many respects, but the people who spout that line have motives that have very little to do with historical accuracy.

Maybe, maybe not, and I'm not necessarily advocating it. But, the sheeple are fairly docile for the most part and I imagine the majority would go along.

I wish I could disagree, but I can't. I had hoped that the thousands of emails, calls, letters and actual protests against his craven kow-towing to business interests would wake him up, but it's clear that regardless of how he sugarcoats it, he is going to do what they want -- not what the American people want.

This speech proves it.

I feel any guestworker program is a subsidy to businesses. I feel that employers should have to compete for labor just as they do every other business expense such as rent or fuel. The workers will never improve their standard of living if employers can import cheap labor. Too many on this board have no sympathy for workers as they feel their jobs are not in jepordy or that they are so smart unfettered immagration won't effect them. This plan by the senate will bring in so many immigrants that we will be like Mexico in a few years. Bush and his rich buddies will do fine and the rest of us will just be the peons.

Oh, I don't blame him for everything. This is an old problem. But opportunities like this don't come around too often. We have a limited amount of time before this issue get's put on the back-burner again. It just seems there is little will from the Rep. to solve this.

There are many glaring problems with this speech.

One of the most striking is how many times he makes excuses for the thousands of employers he has failed to prosecute for hiring illegal aliens under existing US law.

"The President speaks about a fence, biometric id cards, troops on the border and you say that he's for OPEN borders? Give me a break!"

"A man whose changed against his will,

- is of the same opinion still."

It took the worst popularity ratings for a President since Jimmy Carter to make Bush move even a little with illegal immigration reform. Even so, he has changed nothing of his personal views, he still calls the invaders "temporary workers" and wants to grant them amnesty and citizenship, inspite of the fact they broke U.S. laws in coming here and nobody knows who or what many of them are; whether terrorists, dangerous criminals or mentally ill, carriers of disease, gang members, rapists, killers, sociopaths who were not wanted in their own communities, or whatever.

Bush's amnesty obsession is reminiscent of the Castro Mariel Boat people fiasco, where the hispanic dictator emptied his country of the undesirables and Jimmy Carter welcomed them into our society. But Bush's modern version of the "Mariel boat people" is a million times worse than Carter's was because of the truly massive numbers of them, (12 - 20 million people). This whole amnesty thing is irrational, and it is not in the best interests of America. Bush blathered on about American "traditions", but illegal immigration has never been an American tradition.

Farah is so over, my friend. He's the Billy Ray Cyrus of pundits.

may be true. may not. either way, though ... a little story: back in 1963, a third grade class was taking a field trip through the guggenheim (sp?) museum. there was an extension to the museum being built. cast in place concrete walls. being third graders, they were more interested in the steel monkeys climbing up and down tying rebar in place than they were the jackson pollack crud they were more than capable of producing themselves. one little girl asked: why don't they build the walls on the ground, and then tip them up in place? foreman overheard her, and guess what? entire industry revolutionized.

the point?

eh. i dunno. not quite sure what caused mr. farrah to fall into such disfavor with so many on fr. but remember ... even a broken clock is right twice each day.

"It still adds up to open borders and amnesty." Care to substantiate that statement?

The border patrol is not involved in "catch and release". That is INS and nothing is changing with it.

The only thing I see changing is with technology we will take their picture as they come across. Kind of like Candid Camera but their prize will be a stay in the U.S. The National Guard will not be involved in law enforcement. Hellloooooooo! Chris Simcox and his Minutemen will do more and are doing more than the National Guard who will not be involved in apprehending illegals. And, they will only be there for 1 year. What a joke. What happens then?

There already is H-1B visas for those jobs that need (which is a crock)workers. Let the Mexicans apply for these visa just like everyone else. Why should they be treated any different than everyone else?

Ah, substantiate. Okay. Here's the President's words: "It is neither wise nor realistic to round up millions of people, many with deep roots in the United States, and send them across the border."

If this isn't amnesty I got the wrong dictionaries.

true, i just see legal issues that prevent him from usurping gubernatorial powers from individual states. he can't just "dissolve" the governors powers on both borders

>>>>So after over fifty years of inaction, you think he's had plenty of time to act and his time is up.

Conservatives have been speaking out about illegal immigration for decades, while Democrats have been advancing liberal immigration policy for quite some time. Open borders and illegal immigration has been a serious problem for the last 15 years and after 9-11, it became a critical national security issue. Obviously, Bush hasn't gotten the job done and that has to change, immediately. Without amnesty, or a path to citizenship.

>>>>>I guess that means you think he's betrayed the country and doesn't really care about our security. Nice.

I think you ought to tone down the rhetoric and grow up.
