"People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law."It was very nice of the President to say that. We all know that won't happen even if Congress creates a bill that mandates it. Some legal applicants have been waiting over twenty years. Does anyone really believe all of these illegals are going to get behind that line? Or should we believe that Congress will fund the bureaucracy needed to process all of that before 2050?

If the illegal is working, it's broken more then our immigration laws.
If the illegal is not working, it's more then likely broken more then our immigration laws.

Firstly, an illegal alien is a lawbreaker, and in no way is he the Ger of the Bible. To say otherwise is a false exegesis.
Secondly, I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. NIV Jn 10:1
Thirdly, I am very familiar with grace, but that does not give one a license to sin. Nor does that give you the right as a pastor to leave one in lawbreaking. The grace of God is designed to lead us to obedience, not disobedience.
Fourthly, Why do you keep calling me Lord, Lord, but dont do what I tell you? I will show you what everyone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. He is like a person building a house, who dug a deep hole to lay the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the floodwaters pushed against that house but couldnt shake it, because it had been founded on the rock. But the person who hears what I sayr but doesnt act on it is like someone who built a house on the ground without any foundation. When the floodwaters pushed against it, that houses quickly collapsed, and the ruin of that house was devastating. ISV Lk 6:46

It is quite clear that Abraham and Lot (his nephew) were UNWELCOME Aliens in their sojourns. They had left their country in roughly Iraq, and they had traveled to Palestine. Many objected to their use of water and pasture.
An unwelcome alien and an illegal alien are two different beings legally.

They shouldn't be allowed to get in line behind those who have applied legally. They should not be allowed to get into the line at all.
I will trot out the oft-used phrase/question; just what part of "illegal" in "illegal immigrant" do you not understand?

The illegal aliens get to wait at the back of the line in the States as a legal, whereas the person trying to immigrate here legally gets to wait overseas. What is wrong with this scenario?

I think some posters are letting their desperate hopes color their perception. All I heard was a half hearted semi-proposal that ignored specifics and made vauge promises.
1) Bush called for "high-tech" fences employing cameras/motion detectors - sounds like a VIRTUAL fence scam once more. Besides "urban-corridors" is NOT the 700 miles of real fencing proposed in the House (let alone the full border fencing proposed by Goode-Hunter in their house bill).
2) A few barriers in rural areas and some patrol roads with "drones" does not sound like ANY or serious barriers outside urban areas.
3) His guest worker B.S. applies to new guest workers. I sensed the current illegals will be given a free pass to stay, work, and wait for citizenship. Although, he is so vauge so as to let people believe different things.
4) Document security is little more than a shiny ID card for guest workers. No improvment in D.L. ID standards, no SS card improvment. No mention of computer data bases. No mention of the 40% who overstay their visas who fake their citizenship with phoney SS cards. No specifics on internal enforcement, no improvement with more internal agents. No specific penalties that "THIS TIME" will be enforced. No mention of how many new beds and dentention centers. Just 6000 new agents for a 2000 mile border
5)He intentionally mangled language, calling for a "middle way", as if he is at least holding current illegals partially accountable. How? By "compromising" and giving them a path to citizenship while staying here. What is that the middle of, what are the illegals giving up in return?????. NOTHING.
Bush is a little man - a small minded and crabbed thinker who does not even know when he is lieing and dribbling utterly vapid rhetoric...he thinks he said something tonight.
Pathetic.

Hehehehehe. Yeah. I have yet to see a single post by someone having kittens about this speach that can't be totally deconstructed by quoting lines from the actual speach. The opposition to this speach is shrill and shallow and without a basis in fact. It's that simple.Yes, it really is that simple. I agree.

No what you heard tonight was Bush changing his policy and doing many things that most Conservatives have said should be done. And now even that isn't good enough. Unlike politicians I could give a rip about trying to please people who can't be pleased. The speach is a good step. A good start. If you ecpect the moon overnight, well. That's just disconnected from reality. It would be nice to have it that way, but that's not how the system works.
