Over 70% of the United States annual population growth (and over 90% of California, Florida, and New York) results from immigration.

The more things change, the more they say the same.
Isn't LA and/or some of the surrounding municipalities ones that passed a law that didn't allow the police to ask if someone was legal or not and to not help in enforcing Fed immigration laws?
Ah, the inconvenient facts come forth! I noticed that Bush did not address this aspect of the problem, nor did he address the Reconquista aspect (the returning of the S.W. US to Mexico via immigration of Mexicans). Guest workers could be a good idea if one didn't have to worry about some of them agitating for Reconquista while they worked here.
So let's stop them from crossing the border, send back those who are committing all those crimes, and all those who are on welfare, and keep those that are working and supporting themselves and otherwise doing what a "good immigrant" would do to gain citizenship.
Why throw out the baby with the bathwater?
