5,000 troops would work out to be about 6 to 8 miles per trooper. This is not going to work!

No one is going to fault you on your arithmetic, but there is a bit more to it than a simple division.
Someone is going to have to stay behind to bake fresh Pizza for all those guards. Also someone else is going to have to drive the truck to the border so that the Pizza can be delivered while it is still hot. And someone else will have to see that the truck has a full gas tank before starting the trip. Don't foprget the guy who fixes the rifles and issues the ammunition.
The list of mundane support jobs goes on and on. Perhaps as few as 500 of the 5,000 will actually get to see the actual boredr.

5,000 on the border is like 5 miles of dry air in a category 5 hurricane.
Most boarders have two feet, unless your boarding house is equipped for the handicapped.
Boarding houses are not as subject to compliance laws as hotels or apartments.
Especially near the border.
Why not leave the troops there until the border is actually secure - not until some arbitrary staffing number or time period has been met. When we cut the illegal border crossings down from over 1,000,000 per year to something less than 10,000 per year, THEN we can talk about pulling the troops off the border. If that means we have to build a double fence border barrier (and I think it does) then lets get to work.
Deploying troops in order to provide cover for the Kennedy-designed amnesty plan to be rammed through Congress and to keep the conservative base quiet until election time is a serious abuse of power and misuse of our troops. I certainly hope that the President doesn't plan on doing this and that he's serious about securing the border. From all indicators so far since Friday when he announced the speech and rumors came out about troop deployment, I think that the President is going to go the wrong way on this.
I hope they get to wear cool looking uniforms.
I would imagine that even if Bush announced that 100,000 troops would be stationed on the border, many would still complain that this was too little, too late.
