BUSH: WE CAN'T BOOT 11M ILLEGALS
NY Post ^ | 5/15/06

Posted on 05/15/2006 5:48:16 AM PDT by areafiftyone

May 15, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In his live, nationally televised address tonight, President Bush will tell Americans that it's impossible to deport the estimated 11 million illegal aliens living here.

"We must reject amnesty, but recognize that it is not realistic to round up millions of people and send them home," said White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri in a preview of Bush's speech.

She said Bush plans to spell out his vision for sealing the border, enforcing the law, and "creating a rational system for workers to come into our country and to do jobs Americans won't do." Bush plans to visit the U.S.-Mexican border this week, and will dispatch his Cabinet to help sell the immigration plan.

The Senate plans to return to the contentious issue this week now that Republicans and Democrats have a deal to plow through controversial amendments. But the House and Senate are far apart on whether to put illegals on a path to citizenship.

Tamburri said Bush would call for "better equipment, increased funding, and advanced technology" to secure the border.

She didn't confirm press reports that Bush wants to expand deployments of National Guard Troops to step up border enforcement. Some Guard troops are already deployed in Arizona and New Mexico, but Bush is considering a big increase.

White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said that enforcement was the Border Patrol's job - but then asked whether they needed help from the Guard on an "interim basis."

"This is not about militarizing the border," he said. The president is looking to do everything he can to secure the border. It's what the American people want."

"I am getting really tired of hearing this lame excuse."

So am I.

I worked my way through engineering school by doing construction and road work during the summers.

I cannot afford to pay my son's way through college unless he works during the summer. He will need a job that some illegal is now taking.

In the very poor county that I live in there are many people that are doing "the jobs Americans won't do" to make a living, and they are losing them to illegal labor.

There is no job an American won't do. Watch a few "Dirty Jobs" shows.

This issue was not a big deal a mere 18 months ago in the election. All of a sudden it's the ONLY issue that matters. What nonsense.

Gee, do you suppose that could the situation because there is actually legislation being drafted now and there wasn't 18 months ago? You are trying to deflect from the fact that the political injuries Bush is suffering here are entirely self-inflicted.

The economy is booming because of the massive federal spending by the government. However, someday, there will be a knock on the door to pay the bill. Glad you enjoy the socialist prescription drug plan espoused by Bush.

And, by now you should know that everyone who is in favor of enforcing immigration laws is racist. Everyone who doesn't agree with Ted Kennedy is a racist.

"Yes, and another purge from FR will ensue. Many conservatives have been banned or suspended."

I've only been here a couple of years but we survived Terri Shiavo. In your opinion has there been worse?

It's rather ironic when folks either think we should emulate the Clintonistas or start generating Clintonista-style spin.

marching in the streets and the stampede of the right into attacking the President is coincidentally pretty close to the November elections.

You're comparing apples & oranges. While the media misportrayed the Tet Offensive, they did a good job informing the public of exactly where illegals and their supporters stand: "Today we march, tomorrow we vote".

The GOP isn't in any danger of losing the election by opposing this extortion - it's in danger from appeasement.

Yep. The President's argument is stupid. Its like arguing that just because say, we can't round up every rapist we ought to give up enforcing our laws against rape. And here we are not even going to enforce our immigration laws because of the government's willful failure to enforce them in the first place! I don't see why the American people should pay the price with their jobs, higher taxes and reduced services for our government's failure to protect our country. Instead of trying to reduce the number of illegal aliens, the President says we need to reward their breaking our laws. Now I'm even angrier.

Dane: Nope, I am not OK with the taxpayers paying it.

There you have it Freepers! Dane is all broken up over employers sticking taxpayers with the cost of illegals

Yuh know, pluty, you really should learn how to read English before you go on your knee jerk rants about people named Juan being illiterate.

And it only takes a few election cycles for the newly legalized to start voting Democrat.

I was forced to leave Arizona because they took ove the construction industry with wage we could not live on.

They are lousy carpenters, everything out of plumb, square and cuts that look like they are done with a chainsaw. Some of them are.

"A more effective approach would be to investigate employers to see if they were following mandated I-9 verfication processes."

I agree but being that's the case it's going to take a bit more than the 2 weeks some here on FR want to give in order to get rid of 12 million.

IMO, the border issue has caused more casualties here on FR.

What I hate most is the GOP embracing the Democrats' discourse of failure.

"We have failed the people admittedly -- but it's too late and would be infeasible to send them back -- so we might as well give up."

If this is the logic, it shows how Bush is no longer a leader.

actually, my friendly neighborhood ATM, which used to require you to press english (or spanish) to go any further, now has a whole new, more animated interface, which allows the English User to go straight to the first banking choice, while also politely displaying a whole bunch of buttons (at least spanish, german, polish, greek, russian, and a couple of oriental languages)that you can press to proceed in those languages. I thought it was quite neat.

One general question for all "solution proposers" -- would you accept this proposal if it were the rule in a country in which you were visiting? (e.g., illegal to have ATM's that understood english, illegal to notify the American embassy if you are arrested, cops can ask you for your papers if your umbrella isn't rolled as tightly as the other brits?).

Many proposals made on this site would pass that test, but a whole lot would not.

Yeah that's the first thing I noticed. It shows the President is out of touch and has lost his ability to sense the mood of the electorate.

It is a completely innecessary phrase "jobs Americans won't do". It gains absolutely nothing in a political sense and it makes one wonder why he uses it.

Everywhere there is a large bloc of hispanics the bullets are flying. That is fact, not fiction. Sound racist? To damn bad.

I noted that when the predominantly black neighborhood I live in in my college days transitioned to predominantly Mexican. Not much has changed in 30 years...

Do me a favor. Go back and check when your first post about illegal immigration was. Now I know that there were occasional discussions about it on FR, but for goodness sake, Bush campaigned about this in both 2000 and 2004 and there was hardly a peep here!

So why has this become such an all-out war on FR and within the party? Why can't we discuss the solution rationally? Slogans are fine, but "enforcing the law" isn't really the solution, considering the stupid laws Clinton passed.

I think that if we don't get a handle on this, things are going to get worse, particularly if the Marxist wind the Mexican election in July. Rather than finding fault with each other, can we not discuss the solutions without everyone going off the deep end?

For example, if tonight the President calls for first securing the border and then a guest worker program next year, how many will simply say "too late, he won't enforce it, he doesn't mean it, etc?"
