Punk rock prodigy earns MBA at 18

PITTSBURGH - Jessica Meeker is not your average MBA. She’s a black-clad, punk rock fanatic whose hair has seen more colors than the average rainbow.

She’s also 18, and on Saturday, she will be the youngest student ever to receive an MBA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, school officials said.

She’s not caught up in being a prodigy, though.

“It just feels so good to finally be done,” Meeker said Friday. “I have been in college for so long.”

At age 12, Meeker became the youngest student to enroll at Pennsylvania State University and, at 16, she was the youngest to earn a bachelor’s degree there, majoring in psychology.

Intelligence, cultural preferences, personality and political philosophy are not causally related--in spite of popular perceptions otherwise.

Yeah i remember it was the jocks smoking the dope when I was in high school. There was a pac between the kids who dressed different like skaters, punk rockers called straight edge where they would put an X on their hands as a sign of defiance against drugs and alcohol.

“I have been in college for so long.”

It took me ten years of college, working, raising kids to get my degree. When I graduated, I didn't just get a diploma, I got a gold watch.

As all our mothers used to say,"You can't judge a book by it's cover".

"Intelligence... and political philosophy are not causally related..."

You're right of course, but I bet their IS a causal connection between common sense, personal responsibility, moral sacrifice, and political philosophy.

Geez... there was a thread about a guy who refuses to graduate college. He has been enrolled full time almost as long as she has been alive!

One Saturday I took a walk to Zipperhead
I met a girl there
And she almost knocked me dead
Punk rock girl please look at me
Punk rock girl what do you see?
Let's travel round the world
Just you and me punk rock girl

I tapped her on the shoulder
And said do you have a beau?
She looked at me and smiled
And said she did not know
Punk rock girl give me a chance
Punk rock girl let's go slamdance
We'll dress like Minnie Pearl
Just you and me punk rock girl

We went to the Phillie Pizza Company
And ordered some hot tea
The waitress said "Well no
We only have it iced"
So we jumped up on the table
And shouted "anarchy"
And someone played a Beach Boys song
On the jukebox
It was "California Dreamin'"
So we started screamin'
"On such a winter's day"

She took me to her parents
For a Sunday meal
Her father took one look at me
And he began to squeal
Punk rock girl it makes no sense
Punk rock girl your dad is the Vice President
Rich as the Duke of Earl
Yeah you're for me punk rock girl

We went to a shopping mall
And laughed at all the shoppers
And security guards trailed us
To a record shop
We asked for Mojo Nixon
They said "He don't work here"
We said "If you don't got Mojo Nixon
Then your store could use some fixin'"

We got into a car
Away we started rollin'
I said "How much you pay for this?"
She said "Nothing man, it's stolen"
Punk rock girl you look so wild
Punk rock girl let's have a child
We'll name her Minnie Pearl
Just you and me
Eating fudge banana swirl
Just you and me
We'll travel round the world
Just you and me punk rock girl

"Baby boom or X
I don't know what I am.
All I need to know is
When it's time to slam!"

Nice to know you're cool again after 25 years.

She looks a bit more Goth than Punk to me. When I hear punk, I think the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious and the Dead Kennedys. When I think Goth, it’s more like the Cure and Robert Smith (who did after all did battle and defeat Mecha Streisand).

Heck if you judged me today based on a circ 1974 picture of me as a teen; wearing my hip hugger bell bottom pants, peasant blouse, clogs, and peace sign jewelry, you’d never imaging the Republican, home owning, corporate management, responsible adult I am today. In fact now that I think about it, my 1974 outfit would be right in style today.

Good for her. Earning her MBA at 18, maybe she’ll be heading up the next MicroSoft. No wait – Bill Gates didn’t have an MBA – he was a college drop out. So much for judging a book by its cover.

Considering she's wearing a Misfits shirt, I'll give you even money she's a conservative.

I'm a fairly staid, uptight guy. T-shirt and jeans are my preferred clothing.

That said, one of the sweetest girls I ever met is a heavily-tatooed punk rock girl. Never judge a book by its cover, indeed.

“It just feels so good to finally be done,” Meeker said Friday. “I have been in college for so long.”

I think she's probably going to find the rest of her life to be a bit boring after all those exciting years in Indiana,PA. Huh?

Take it from this retired punk rocker, punk has been dead for about 20 years now. What these kids are into is bizarre nostalgia. Reminds me of P.J. O'Rourke's comment about modern day hippies making him think of how he and other genuine hippies would've reacted to kids dressing up in zoot suits and listening to big band music in the 60's.
