Frist: Guard troops the best short-term border fix
CNN ^ | May 14, 2006 | CNN

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist on Sunday dismissed concerns about a proposal to use National Guard troops to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border, saying it is the only short-term solution to stem the flow of illegal immigrants.

"The only thing that we can do to secure our borders right now is to give our states help, and that is best done through the National Guard," the Tennessee Republican told CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer."

President Bush is scheduled to speak to the nation Monday night from the Oval Office about immigration and border security. (Full story)

Frist could not say whether the president will mention the proposal to bolster border security with National Guard troops.

Bush has discussed the proposal to bolster border security with National Guard troops, along with "a lot of [other] ideas," with members of Congress, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley told CNN.

"I suggest we support and finance the Minuteman Project."

I am all for that. If they want support to the border patrol, they can hire civilians who will be more than happy to perform those duties.

You need to read the entire paragraph:

"The Administration Is Ending The Practice Of "Catch-And-Release." The President has set a goal to end "catch-and-release" over the next year. Most illegal immigrants from Mexico can be returned to Mexico within 24 hours. Non-Mexican illegal immigrants present a different challenge. For decades, government detention facilities did not have enough beds for the non-Mexican illegal immigrants caught at the border - so most were released back into society. They were each assigned a court date, but virtually no one showed up. The Administration is ending the practice of "catch-and-release" by increasing the number of beds in detention facilities by 12 percent this year; the President's FY07 budget proposes increasing that number by another 32 percent. The Administration is expanding the use of "expedited removal," which allows us to send non-Mexican illegal immigrants home more quickly. "

and when a hand-full of minutemen get mowed down in a hail of bullets from some drug cartel, who will think civilians is a good idea?

I know, I'm sorry!

I tried to correct it in #56 but sitting here shivering in a wet towel after a swim does nothing for intelligent brain activity.

"Since President Bush took office, funding for border security has increased by 66 percent."

hb: 66% increase in five years. Why am I not impressed. They increased federal bribes to education by more than that in one year, just to pick one comparison.

====

You are a prime example of the people I was talking about -- even when definite positive things are being done, going in the right direction, you are not giving President Bush ANY credit, and just keep complaining, and complaining.

I bet if he waved a magic wand and sealed the border tomorrow, you would complain that why didn't he do it earlier or why didn't he also make the illegal aliens already here disappear with the same wave of the magic wand, or something.

You are definitely one of the unappeasable, NOTHING, but NOTHING will satisfy you. You are only happy, if you can bash President Bush, or blame Republicans, after Hillary and the Dems get in power. Then illegal immigration won't even bother you, I bet.

"when a hand-full of minutemen get mowed down in a hail of bullets from some drug cartel,"

=====

You are definitely making a good point.

I was referring to the role, in which they want to use the National Guard: in support role, NOT active enforcement role -- whatever that means. In that role, they can hire people, whether contractors, or bring the Minutemen into official status as support to the border guard, paying them and outlining their responsibilities, etc.

The Minuteman Project is an excellent example of responsible citizenship IMO.
HOWEVER
Could it be possible that the phenomenon of recent border rage is part of the never ending media "War on Bush" ? It seems like there is a new attack each week of some form or other.... maybe this has been whipped up by the media in order to turn us conservatives, "The Base", against Bush and attempt to fragment the party ? If so, should we fall into that trap ? ? ?

This problem existed long before GWB started serving his first term......long before.

Yes. You are correct. However, Bush is finishing up his sixth year in office. Not only has he refused to do anything about our open borders but his administration has made considerable effort to stop any enforcement. We have no obligation to make it easier for law violaters to gain citizenship.

Enough speeches and "discussions" with the Mexican government. Start by closing the border with troops, fences and any other method. Deport every illegal immigrant when they are found and begin serious efforts to find them. Shut down any operation using illegal immigrant labor. If I hear these in the Monday speech I'll believe that Bush in interested in protecting this country.

What will the National Guard do with the thousands they capture?? We don't want them simply being turned loose on the (empty) promise to appear at a hearing six months hence. Perhaps Joe Arpaio would be willing to franchise his desert tent camp system, and the illegals would have the choice to either return to Mexico, or accept incarceration in a border tent camp for a few months. How could we assure that if they attempt illegal entry, they are assuredly identified, and never allowed future legal reentry?

It seems to me, after watching them on the news this weekend, that the Minutemen may be too emotionally invested in this. Perhaps there are enough retired, unemployed, rookie cops around that could be enlisted to help? Just a thought.

The National Guard would NOT be used in active enforcement role, only SUPPORTING role to the Border Patrol. That is a very poor use of the trained menpower.

You are so wrong in this statement. PRESIDENT Bush has done more to attempt to stop the illegal alien invasion than any other President before him.

I suggest you read up on the threads here at FR and educate yourself to exactly just what has been done especially those posted by FairOpinion who has listed the progress made several times. If that is too much of a chore for you maybe a trip in person to the border would assist you in learning the truth.

Most were shallow and easy-to-detect “gopher holes” used by undocumented immigrants

All I need to know about your opinion is contained in the above sentence. Undocumented immigrants are

Illegal Aliens

I am not buying what you are peddling, because your articles look like they are bought and paid for.

The same argument can be said with National Guards.

The simple answer is, the Minutemen will be armed.
