Islamic terror suspects in Britain up 50 percent since last year: report

The number of Islamic extremist security suspects in Britain has increased by 50 percent since the deadly suicide bombings in London last year, The Observer newspaper said on Sunday.

A senior intelligence source at the country’s domestic spy agency MI5 was quoted as saying that they were targeting 800 such suspects before the bombings on July 7 last year, but that figure now stood at 1,200.

In September 2001, the number of people deemed a “risk to national security” was 250, the newspaper said.

The unnamed MI5 source did not give a reason for the apparent rise in radicalisation but described the threat as “current, relentless and increasing”.

The Observer said a radical Islamic cleric whose sermons were attended by one of the July 7 bombers is to be released from prison ”within weeks” after serving just over half of a nine-year sentence for inciting murder and racial hatred.

Jamaican-born Abdullah el-Faisal once preached at the Brixton, south London, mosque attended by “Shoebomber” Richard Reid and Zacarias Moussaoui, the only man to be convicted in connection with the September 11, 2001 attacks.

He was convicted by a British jury in 2003 after his trial heard he had called for the murder of all non-Muslims and justified the use of nuclear and chemical weapons.

The newspaper said an order for his deportation was filed by the Home Office on March 30 but his lawyers have applied for his release on parole pending his removal.

Sounds like MI5 is doing its job. We need a dedicated domestic intelligence agency like MI5.

I don't see evidence of a "rise in radicalisation". After the 7/7 bombs there was increased investigation of radicals. Of course this discovered new suspects.

"Sounds like MI5 is doing its job."
No, they are not doing their job. They would be, if the number of active suspects remained the same or even diminished a bit due to a string of various regrettable accidents and/or disappearances.

Americans take note. The Moslems have been allowed to emigrate to Britain in large numbers.

Hope the British can tackle this problem.

Of course, however, it is an optional problem - which they elected to have by importing so many people from terrorist-source countries and cultures over the past 30 years.

(Of course, however, under UK speech restriction laws, I could probably be charged for saying that).

No, the number has not increased or decreased, they are only acknowledging terrorists that they have ignored in the past, due to "political correctness", and will fail to act against these people for the very same reason. Acknowledging is one thing, doing something about is another, don't count on the Brits...

I would guess that MI5 faces the same politically correct restrictions as the FBI.

There are more jihadis now because Britian didn't do squat after the 7/7 bombings. This has just served to empower the jihadis and recruit more because of their successes and lack of retribution by the Brit government.

You have to remember that in Britian they took the guns away from everyone. As a result, the crime rate has skyrocketed. If a British subject fights back against a criminal that accosts him/her then it is the law-abiding victim that goes to jail with the victim paying restitution to the criminal.

I expect much more Islamic terrorism in the future since the Brits see the Muslims as a mis-understood, oppressed culture. I can say the same about America.

Agreed. The "MI5" source might also be surprised that when he recognized that the King's new clothes were an illusion; he noticed that there was also an unexplained increase in the King's nakedness! "Ninny" is an English expression, I think. Perhaps MI5 might consider adding it to said "agents" list of qualified certifications.

Emigrate to? It is immigrate to, emigrate from. Sorry to be such a spelling nag, it is a common enough mistake.
