NINE men suspected of preparing for a terrorist act communicated by covert text message and referred to each other by women's names, a court has been told.
Khaled Cheikho, 32, was among eight men arrested in November last year during counter-terrorism raids in Sydney. A ninth co-accused was arrested about a month later.
All nine face possible life sentences on charges of conspiring to do an act in preparation for a terrorist act.
During Cheikho's bail application in the NSW Supreme Court today, Crown Prosecutor Wendy Abraham QC said the nine men bought items capable of making explosives.
Cheikho was in possession of computer documents about manufacturing explosives, Ms Abraham said.
He also had "covert phones" which were taken out in false names and used to communicate with his co-accused in code, she said.
One message between Cheikho and co-accused Mohammed Elomar referred to the purchase of some insulation tape allegedly used to make explosives, the court was told. "Hello darling, could you let me know if you still have rolls of the silver tape," one message from Cheikho allegedly read.
Ms Abraham said rolls of the tape were then purchased by several of the co-accused.
She said the text messages were also used to organise meetings between the men.
"Hi babes I'm missing you," one message allegedly read, while another said: "How you going love, did Sue want to meet me".
Ms Abraham said the women's names clearly referred to the accused "because the defendants are turning up in various places (where it was agreed in the messages to meet)".
Cheikho is the first of the accused to have a bail hearing in the NSW Supreme Court.
The hearing continues before Justice Timothy Studdert.
THIS is why phonecalls and communications of suspected terrorists needs to be monitored: to foil their attacks.
Not to mention bad grammer, because I was inserting words in the wrong place...
Exactly.
Yet the libs still join CAIR and others in crying foul.
BRB FBI.
More proof that this is indeed a World War. Anyone who thinks this is not a World War isn't paying attention. In the past week I have read articles about Al Qaeda activity in the following nations:
USA
Mexico
United Kingdom
Denmark
Germany
Turkey
Algeria
Morroco
Egypt
Somalia
Iraq
Afghanistan
Pakistan
Bangladesh
Indonesia
Australia
The Philippines
We have a nation many of whose citizens have no effing clue what a war is. That scares me more than osumabitch.
innocuous
Not to mention bad grammer, because
ROTFL :o) Funny post, even if it was intentional.
Given SB1437, the 'gay history' bill, how do you suppose California's new history books will report the story of these guys?
