A Purge has been conducted on the FSB, MVD Prosecutors Office, Customs and the Federation Council.
On Friday the Prime Minister was directed by the Russian president to order the forced retirements and firing of high ranking members of the FSB, MVD Prosecutors and Customs office and the Federal Customs Service. Federation Council members were also told to step down.
These retirements were conducted in accordance with the governments anti-corruption campaign. A government source told Interfax that this action was not a witch hunt, but was conducted in order to counteract the criminal elements that have taken hold in the power ministries.

I notice you frequently reference Zinoviev as being "late" - he's been "late" for quite some time and hasn't been "followed" by anyone for ages.
Your post shows the problem in Russia, or should I say with "Russian emigres" -persistent cynicism - while cynicism is healthy in limited doses, there can be no forward progess as long as people continue to see bad even in positive events.
Of course, I'm not surprised about the problems with corruption, etc., in the Slavic world - by why stop at Zinoviev, let's lay this back where it belongs - at the feet of the Mongol horde which infused bribery and tribute into the Slavic peoples.
"Late" Zinoviev because he died this week, 3 days ago, I believe. And as for the Mongols - why not go earlier, to AD 988? Equally Slavic lands which ended in the orbit of Western civ exhibit these problems to much smaller degrees.
my bad - thinking of THE other Zinoviev.....
Correct. Zinoviev Alexandr Alexandrovich, 1922-2006, of "Yawning Heights" fame. Not the Grigory Evseevich (?) from early Stalin years.
I've been trying to get my hands on French language copies of the Harry Potter books. I figure something I like to read will help me improve my French literacy more than trying to read a copy of one of Balzac's novels, which I doubt would be understandable even in English.
Obscene Russian poetry... LOL.
The government press service announced Andrei Belyaninov's appointment a day after President Vladimir Putin placed customs under the direct control of Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, explained as necessary to tackle graft and administrative chaos.
Belyaninov, like Putin, served in the KGB's foreign arm in East Germany during the Soviet era.
Until now, the customs service had been under the control of Economy Minister German Gref, a liberal who has been engaged in a battle of wills with Fradkov over economic policy. The prime minister favours greater state control of the economy.
Putin's decree followed several widely-publicised arrests of customs officials. Earlier, the Kremlin leader criticised the government for allowing what he described as the "privatisation of customs". ...
Since 1991, Belyaninov has headed the Rosoboronexport weapons monopoly and the Federal Arms Procurement Agency.
He replaces Alexander Zherikov. The government press service said Zherikov was moving to a new job, without elaborating.
That doesn't sound good.
Its like Tony Sapranos family playing musical chairs.
