Conyers Defies Pelosi on Impeachment
NewsMax.com ^ | May 12, 2006 | Carl Limbacher

Speaker of the House wannabe Nancy Pelosi is desperately trying to reassure the public that Democrats won't launch an impeachment jihad against President Bush if they win back the House in November.

In fact, lead House Bush-basher John Conyers has canceled his plans for impeachment hearings, she insists.

However, Mr. Conyers - who will chair the committee where impeachment would begin if his party regains control - seems to be disregarding the message.

Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly insisted to the Washington Post on Friday that his boss had "told her caucus members during their weekly closed meeting Wednesday that impeachment is off the table; she is not interested in pursuing it."

Daly also claimed that Conyers "agrees with Pelosi's thinking" that Democrats would be better off pursuing other issues and forgetting about impeachment.

But that's not what Conyers is saying on his recently redesigned official web site.

"Stand with Congressman Conyers," the Michigan Democrat implores.

"Demand an Investigation of Administration Abuses of Power and Make Recommendations Regarding Grounds for Possible Impeachment if Warranted . . . .

"Join me to demand the creation of a Special Committee to investigate administration abuses of power and make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment if warranted."

Nancy Pelosi - call your office.

"...Daly also claimed that Conyers "agrees with Pelosi's thinking" that Democrats would be better off pursuing other issues and forgetting about impeachment...."

Unfortunately, the Democrats have no "issues" and that may be the reason for the threats of impeachment.

They'd be in trouble if they had to talk about real issues like the War on Terror, etc.

The Reps are already making it an election issue, which is why San Fran Nan was trying to defuse it. Thank you John Conyers!!

Conyers wouldn't miss his place in the sun for anything. Politically he peronally is bulletproof, that is what he cares
about.

Hard to say. Are they for it or against it?

However, Mr. Conyers - who will chair the committee where impeachment would begin if his party regains control - seems to be disregarding the message.

There are two problems with this...

1) His boring, monotone, droning voice would make people doze, preventing people from hearing his "charges."

2) He has his own baggage. He would receive celebrity "Starr Treatment" from the right if he tries this.

NO. They would consider this unfair play. You know they can't diminish the other faction of the "Cartel".

Look, Pelosi wants to impeach Bush too. This is just like all the Democrats say in their elections where they can't "promise" not to raise taxes, but will try not to. Then 30 days after an election they say something like "the budget was worse than I ever could have imagined and I have no choice but to raise taxes".

Pelosi is just trying not to spook any moderates right now who don't want an impeachment. You can bet your bottom dollar she will absolutely allow it to go through if the Dems get the House.

Anyone that thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. Conyers just isn't acting on the "memo" yet from her, but they are all licking their chops.

Not to worry, Arlen Specter will undoubtedly find some Scottish law to protect W.

Yes, and a lot of payback for Clinton and the 2000 election yet to be distributed. I believe, Democrats being as out of touch with much of America as they are, that they would try to impreach the president over high gasoline prices in an attempt to regain public trust and show--like the aging rocker gone gray and fat--that they're still hip.

IMO If the Dems win back the House we would all be better off they tried to impeach a President with no evidence of wrongdoing than if they tried to pass their version of any bills.

Let them waste their time.
