If Mexico could not hurt our economy by selling its oil elsewhere as a blackmail tactic, there is opportunity to get tough with our border policy.
I have heard talk about putting a stop to Western Union (and others) money transfers into Mexico. That would stop the money flow into Mexico and give less incentive for one to work in the United States.
We cannot go too fast with the deportation effort. There are employers who have become dependent on these workers. You wouldn't want them moving their operations into Mexico.

We cannot go too fast with the deportation effort. I do agree with you there. In fact, I think that mass deportations would be a real mistake as it would it give the illegals a real sympathetic halo.
I feel the best way is a two pronged approach. Cut off the flow by building a way and at the same time, cut off the demand by cracking down on employers of illegals.
The crackdowns on employers must include criminal penalties and not just simple fines for it ever to be effective.

The money sent to Mexico is a boon to their economy and the main reason the Mexican government will do nothing to stem the tide. By putting restrictions on money transfers, the Mexican government will feel the pinch, and could be used as a barganing tool with the Mexicanos..
