Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.
The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.
Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.
He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".
Mel has forgotten.
Apocalypto will now clean up at the Oscars and be regarded as amazing and a classic with a box office take of 80% less than The Passion...just because of this single statement.
All is forgiven in Hollywood now Mel....
President Bush's leadership in the WOT has diminished the chance for terror in the US.
Yeah. But 3000 people were killed in the USA on one day by terrorist activities.
Next time it might be 20,000. Or a million.
Odds have nothing at all to do with it. My odds of being eaten by a shark are probably greater than dying in a terrorist attack, but I am not going to clamor to have sharks eradicated. You guys are missing the point.
I resent your characterization of supporters of the actions against these terrorists and their supporers as "WOT Lovers".
You infer that those who support the WOT love war, death and killing.
Is that what you meant to infer?
They got you Mel! I bet they broke speed records getting this quote posted. Spend more of your time making historically acurate pictures and less time trying to impress the Michael Moorons that you will never win back.
Gibson apparently has a short memory.
Maybe I should believe all the lies the media told about Mel Gibson, since Gibson seems to eat up every lie they've told about the President.
You'd think he'd put two and two together.
The movie was good.
Gibson is making the mistake of believing the media. Heck, if I didn't learn the facts, which routinely discredit media reports, by checking the primary sources, I'd probably have a much lower opinion of the President as well. You would think, though, that Gibson would have a healthy skepticism of media reports of someone they want to smear, having experienced it firsthand himself.
I'm not a huge Russell Crowe fan, but I enjoyed him as Lucky Jack. Master and Commander is one of the few movies I've bothered to see in a theater in the past several years.
i didn't personally care for it, but i was forced to watch it with a number of friends. altho i didn't particularly care for a number of sections of the movie, it gave me a chance to explain to a number of people the whole story, as well as a bunch of back story, and how it relates to us today, and give witness to them.
???
Is Gibson going to play Jack Aubrey?
HE DAMN WELL BETTER NOT!
And my bet is that the Apocalyoto has MORE to do with Mayan mythology, which suffered an "apocalypse" every 52 years, than it does about what Gibson thinks about President Bush.
They certainly did their part...no argument there...but the shoe-bomber was caught by increased security at the gate because of new Gov't security mandates.
In addition, there are lots more ways of inducing terror besides the use of a plane. Pres. Bush's efforts have minimized those possibilities. It could still happen, of course, but the WOT has decreased the chances. Thank God.
It's not about an individual here or there being killed. It's about the enemy's goal of literally taking over the world. I know it sounds comic bookish, but that IS what we're fighting here. With the kinds of weapons they could get their hands on, and following what they've already done, it's foolish to brush it off by talking about statistics of an individual being killed by this or that.
Thank you. It's amazing how people can block that out, isn't it?
I`m suprised why Laura didn`t name that book "Shut up and act". The leftys singers who mouth off absolutely suck, I mean to each his own but I`d rather stick spikes in my ear drums than listen to the likes of Coldplay, Madonna, Dave Matthews or Springsteen, but the lefties who act, I do like some of their movies. Tim Robbins and Shawshank Redemption was good although it`s now completely overplayed on cable.
Buchanan is not a paleo-conservative. He is a populist. Big difference.
I think Southpark got Gibson right.
I had the same discussion with a left-wing lawyer on a plane flight that was complaining about all the "rights" we had lost. I asked him "how many rights will we lose when one of those bastards detonates a nuke at the White House"? She was speechless.
Most Americans just don't think, especially when those thoughts are inconvenient to their agendas and pre-conceived notions.
