A federal grand jury indictment alleges that five people were behind the firebombing of the University of Washington's horticulture center in May 2001.
The indictment returned Thursday names three people and refers to two others who were not identified in connection with the fire, one of the Northwest's most notorious acts of ecoterrorism.
The horticulture center, which was rebuilt for about $7 million, had done work on fast-growing hybrid poplars in hopes of limiting the amount of natural forests that timber companies log.
The Earth Liberation Front, a shadowy collection of environmental activists, claimed responsibility five days after the fire, issuing a statement saying the poplars pose "an ecological nightmare" for the diversity of native forests.
The Justice Department has said a nine-year investigation into vandalism, arson and ecoterrorism eventually uncovered a conspiracy involving at least two dozen people who held secret meetings around the West to plan their attacks.
Most have been charged in Washington state or Oregon.
The indictment said Justin Solondz, formerly of Jefferson County, Wash., conducted attacks in Washington and Oregon. It also alleges that he, William C. Rodgers, Briana Waters and two others destroyed the Center for Urban Horticulture.
Solondz, also facing an arson indictment in California, is believed to have fled the country.
Rodgers, of Prescott, Ariz., committed suicide in jail after being charged with other acts of ecoterrorism.
Waters, of Berkeley, Calif., had previously been indicted in the case. She has pleaded not guilty. If convicted of conspiracy to use destructive devices to commit arson, she and Solondz could face at least 35 years in prison.
Amazing how these ELF idiots create more destruction of the earth than they prevent.
Wow, these folks be nuts.
I think they have a good chance of getting off if they simply plead insanity.
That's the trouble with arsonists. They always get too fired up!
I never understood the logic of burning down a $1 million home, just so it can be reconstructed using even more wood.
Without more information, it sounds like they are trying to develop better weed-tree varieties. If true, my guess is that ELF is not the only people who are ticked off.
I had to laugh that time these people lit up several Hummers at a car dealership. The burning of the plastic and paint did more "damage to the ozone" than the vehicle itself would have done in its lifetime of burning gas.
And--the owner of the dealership had a spike in sales afterwards.
"She(Waters)and Solondz could face at least 35yrs in prison."These folks are terrorists/anarchists who are a threat to society.35 years in prison isn't enough.
...committed suicide in jail after being charged with other acts of ecoterrorism...
YOU! Outta the Gene Pool!
