(I've adopted the pejorative term "BorderBots" for them but I use it affectionately)

I'm included in that group who is afraid for our country because the needs of invaders are being pandered to at the expense of American citizens. This has been going on for years, and yet absolutely nothing has been done except talk, talk, talk, no action.

America is angry! We want to see them actually take action instead of listening to more of their talk. No one believes them anymore.

BorderBot. I kinda like it. Just to throw back in the faces of some folks around here used namecalling to attempt to silence conservatives on the issue. :-)

Anyway, until shown differently, my default position is that this is a sell out. I watched what they did with Judges. I watched what happened with Bolton. The Senate has a way of pulling out on an issue we believe won for no good reason other than to cater to the Left.

When I see stakes being driven into the ground then I'll think of helping them out in the fall. I'd like to believe you are right, but this is McCain's Senate after all.

Tactically, I think that stopping the illegal flow at the border is the most important piece of the puzzle.

Agreed. It will take increased Coast Guard action too, when they try and swim across the Gulf and the Pacific to evade the Wall.

There are perhaps 11 million illegals in the country now. A substantial number of those are here for economic reasons, and will go back to Mexico (or elsewhere) at some point.

We need to be encouraging it by gradually ramping up enforcement and PUBLISHING the names of the "leviathan" scoff-laws. Currently protected in anonymity.

If you stop the new flow, then attrition of the existing pool will bring it into manageable size for a slow amnesty of some sort. I think stopping the influx of 2 million MORE every year is the key thing.

To that end, we need to shut down the 'anchor baby' and family reunification rules...and end the remittances to foreign lands.

I'm having trouble opening the link. Can someone please advise if there is even a mention of border security?

I wish I could say that I had faith that either our two Senators from Ohio will do the right thing, but I don't, and Dewine won the Republican primary by a large margin, so we're stuck with him being our best choice in the fall. :(

The laws on the books aren't enforced. What point is there to more legislation?

"Of course it is just another issue. They are running the government FCOL and this is not the most important issue on their plate nor should it be. It wasn't the most important issue in 1994, nor in 2000, nor in 1986, nor in 1993, nor in 2002 or anytime over the last 30 years. It's not the most important issue now either. It is certainly not as important as the Supreme Court being taken over by Ginsbergs.
They should address the problem but they should take their time and do it right. Nothing will happen this year but a bill if we're lucky."

It is the most important issue facing the Republican Party right now, because if they do not pass a substantial border barrier before November, and start building it, the BorderBot base will not contribute money and not vote, and both houses of Congress will pass to the Democrats, ensuring that no more Republican judges are approved, Bush is impeached, and the War on Terror is lost.

The BorderBots have a gun to the head of the Republican Party, and they will pull the trigger if the GOP doesn't give them their barrier.

That makes it the most important issue right now, and it means that a barrier has to be passed this year.

Fortunately, it looks as though the Republicans in the Senate properly understand the magnitude of the threat and are acting to do precisely that.

This cannot be put off until after the election, unless one wishes to have a Democratic Congress decide the issue.

"I do hope you are right."

Believe me, so do I.
I see mortal peril for the Republican Party if the GOP Congress doesn't cave here and vote for a Fence, allocate the funds, and have substantial progress to show by the time the election rolls around.

"What it really means is that they came out with an amnesty program with no consideration at all for enforcement. This is a sham, and apparently it is working. Notice Reid and Frist avoiding the word amnesty, and that enforcement is not discussed, other than some observation technology on the border (= pork).
They have all the necessary laws NOW for border enforcement. They don't use them. What makes you think that they will enforce a bunch of new laws?
Better start learning Spanish so you can gain favor with your future masters."

The BorderBots are not going to be duped.
If that's really what the Republicans have in mind here, then they will lose both houses of Congress.
The BorderBots will accept nothing short of a fence. Already the Republicans are headed for disaster. By going back and putting up legislation, they are trying to divert it. But if they get cute about it and try to be tricky, it will fail completely to persuade the target audience with a gun to their head.

Either there will be a fence approved, money allocated, and construction start, or bonjour Madame Speaker Pelosi. There is not a third way.

And, correct me if I am wrong, IF you don't see Border Fence legislation, and construction starting THIS YEAR, you are not going to send the GOP money or vote for them in November.

This is what they're facing, and I believe facing up to, at last. There is a scent of growing mortal panic in the air in Washington. The GOP leadership is realizing, I believe, that they are actually going to lose Congress, with all that entails (Bush impeached, tax hikes, loss in Iraq, etc.) unless they appease you.

If they get tricksy, you're not going to be convinced.

For you, it's a barrier, or the Republicans die.
And there's nothing else to negotiate.
There are millions more like you.
I think that the Republican leadership has awakened to that, and realized that they can't bluff their way out of it.
That's why I think there will actually be a Fence enacted this year, and construction will start.

It is NOT the most important issue. The base will get in line before November except for the fringe. There are bigger fish to fry than this and a heck of a lot at stake to let the dems muck things up. So we won't let that happen. I expect the Congress will pass some legislature which will begin to chip away at the illegal immigration problem but this old problem will be around forever.

You must have Bush confused with Reagan. And I am all for the fence. That is Tom DeLay's answer and it is mine. Not the total answer, but to stop the bleeding at the borders. Let the private sector and volunteers build the fence. Save some money and keep the Feds from mucking it up.
