In May 1937 Chamberlain’s German ambassador questioned whether German power supported illegitimate aims. In March 1938 Hitler crushed the Austrian government accomplishing a bloodless transformation from country to German district. In May 1938 Hitler informed the Czech envoy he had no aggressive intentions. In September 1938 Chamberlain and Daladier acceded to Hitler by forcing Czechoslovakia to cede Sudetenland. Hitler stated this was his last territorial demand, and gave Chamberlain a written declaration for “peace in our time”. In March 1939 Czechoslovakia ceased to exist, when the remainder came under Hitler’s benevolent protection. As the Nazis and Soviets dismembered Poland, Hitler proffered “real” peace in Europe to France and Britain, who too late recognized the pattern of events, and their posture in prior negotiations.
