Ahh, but let's look at recent history. How did her DH manage to get elected? By dividing the other side. If a third party type manages to get some spotlight, we might be in big trouble.

(Everything I ever need to know about John McCain can't be mentioned 30 days prior to an election!)

Any third party effort is unlikely to bear much political fruit, especially after the only true 50-state alternate party (i.e. "Reform") was mostly destroyed by Pat Buchanan (for which we should all be grateful, Pat's odd views notwithstanding ;).
Plus, the 2008 election will be the first presidential election (not counting the re-election of GWB in '04) in which America finds herself at war and electing a new Commander-In-Chief. I believe that equates into a natural advantage for the GOP, as 'Rats have not demonstrated that they are responsible in the area of national security, and the lurking shadow over any 'Rat candidate in 2008 is that it was on Bill Clinton's watch that America let it's guard down, refused to act against terrorism except as a "law enforcement" exercise, and that set the stage for 9/11 and every man, woman, child and their dog (or cat) knows it.
The Clinton Administration was asleep at the switch, and 3000 dead Americans can testify to that.
