Bush should have spent more time using his bully pulpit pushing a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage than on the war on terror, because the former is a greater treat to the survival of the America we know and love, than the latter.

gay marriage is a states rights issue, abortion will be too someday. voters at the state level have plenty of opportunities to vote and elect people who will express their will regarding gay marriage and abortion.

now, if the SCOTUS tosses the defense of marriage act - then the game changes, but until (if) that happens, I don't see any groundswell for federal activism regarding a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
