unless you provide some disincentives for many of these people to be able to stay, so that they return home, you are stuck with either the status quo, or the worse idea of granting them amnesty.

You're right, of course, and this is my preferred way of handling the problem. I'm also in favor of building a wall and deporting as many illegals as we can manage--even 10% would send the message that getting and staying here is harder than before.

"Employers would have to check Social Security numbers"

Good. Enforce the law ALREADY in place: $250,000 fine for fraudulent use of a SS number.

Doesn't a red flag go up at the IRS when (read: IF) five tax returns come in under the same SSN?

the way I would structure the system is - there is zero barrier to initial hiring. because if there is, then you get into all kinds of civil suits against employers for discrimination.

the employer can hire person X on the spot, and submit the electronic authentication check over the web. If it comes back in two weeks and is invalid - the employer receives a warning. if they fail to act on that, or if some appeal to re-verify fails, then the fines start 2 months later.

this won't stop off-the-books hiring of course.

Wait 'til we get those illegals voting...then you'll see reform.

no one needs to go to jail.

but what you can do, for the egregious offenders who ignore warnings and fines - is to use asset forfeiture laws against them, like we do in the war on drugs, to seize their business assets.

"unless you provide some disincentives for many of these people to be able to stay, so that they return home, you are stuck with either the status quo, or the worse idea of granting them amnesty."

Or worse, we take away the possibility to work but don't deport, and certainly don't take away welfare, so they stay here and live off of the public dole.

but here is the loop hole. You can bet it will take years to get the system in place.

Right you are. First they would actually have to get this law passed, then fund it, and then implement it. Probably take them 45 years.

border security is a separate issue - part of a comprehensive plan of course. what this topic addresses is, what do we do with the people here now (and those who are still coming), who are working?

It is required. All employers are required to have an I-9 form on file verifying eligibility for employment for every new hire. It has been a law since 1986. I have one on file for every employee, past and present.

no one said this was going to be easy.

still, I think that without the ability to obtain work, get money to send home, alot of "transient" illegals will return home.

"The employer sanctions were negotiated separately from other parts of the broader bill after some senators raised concerns about privacy of tax information, liability of employers and worker protections."

IOW, you CANNOT allow amnesty for the illegal alien without providing it for his/her felon employer.

"What's going to happen when you have individuals legally allowed to work in the United States, but they can't confirm it?" asked Angelo Amador, director of immigration policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

I wonder how that works ? The dog ate my homework ?

A tiger with no teeth or claws is just a pretty pussy cat..
Who is to enforce this "law"?..

This law with teeth could solve or attempt to solve the immigration worries.. or part of it.. Which means IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.. Illegal immigration is done/allowed ON PURPOSE by George Bush.. Bush would NEVER sign this law if it had a prayer of being prosecuted.. If no teeth THEN he might sign it.. I say might..

I totally agree.

Unless it REALLY hurts, they won't stop.

Same with a linear border barrier. Unless it has the potential to cause significant hardship or lead to serious bodily harm, illegal entries won't stop.

And they need to incorporate birth dates. The SS admin has the birth date.

You are correct... I misspoke. I should have said the system that goobermint has now to call and VERIFY that a ss# is in fact legal... is strictly voluntary.
