The U.S. Border Patrol is alerting Mexican officials when civilian border patrol groups detain or allegedly mistreat suspected illegal immigrants, according to a newspaper report published Tuesday.
The policy is meant to assure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Mario Martinez told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin of Ontario.
On Tuesday, the agency called the article inaccurate.
Citing interviews with Border Patrol agents and documents on a Mexican government Web site, the newspaper reported agents notify Mexican authorities when members of civilian groups such as the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps apprehend or allegedly use violence against border crossers.
"If an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person," Martinez told the newspaper.
The report also cited three documents on the Web site of the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations that say Mexican consulates are in close contact with Border Patrol officials regarding the safety of border crossers who have been stopped by civilian groups.
T.J. Bonner, president of the Border Patrol agents' union, said members have long complained that the Mexican government has undue influence over U.S. enforcement policies.
"That's not a legitimate role for any foreign nation," Bonner said.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Washington, D.C., issued a statement disputing the newspaper's report.
"Border Patrol does not report activity by civilian, non-law enforcement groups to the government of Mexico," according to the statement. "During a detention of a legal or illegal immigrant that produces an allegation of improper treatment, Border Patrol reports the allegation and allows the appropriate consulate to interview the individual in custody."
The Daily Bulletin's managing editor, Jeff Keating, said Tuesday the newspaper stands by its story.
Martinez did not immediately return a message left Tuesday by The Associated Press, and an after-hours call to the Mexican embassy in Washington, D.C., was not immediately returned.
Minuteman members said any contact between the Border Patrol and Mexican officials negates the group's effectiveness and could endanger the lives of its members.
"It's unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country," said Chris Simcox, the organization's founder. "They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels."
No knocking them intended, I haven't been to WND in ages,, same goes for Real Clear Politics and Newsmax.. used to peruse them a lot..
part of that is due to my spending a lot of time these days focussing on California politics... it's a case of relying on different sources for different stories and issues
So you don't believe the WH but you DO believe the Mexican government? Okey doke.
So where is Mike Wallace gonna end up at anyway? lolol.
CNN? :)
"Wow, I'm sorry I ever doubted them. "
Imagine my sorrow for STILL doubting!
"So you don't believe the WH but you DO believe the Mexican government? Okey doke."
How did you get believing the Mexican government from my post?
A Border Patrol spokesman also said - "we will not allow any lawlessness of any type", as another 5,000 illegal aliens slip across the border tonight, quite happily going about their lawlessness.
Isn't this your post?
"And the WH, according to ABC tonight, said the story isn't true."
Wow, I'm sorry I ever doubted them.
(sarcasm)
So it's ABC you don't believe?
"So you don't believe the WH but you DO believe the Mexican government? Okey doke."

Its not a choice between believing the WH or the Mexican government, its a choice between believing the WH or the Minutemen.
It's not as though the border patrol just LETS them cross and never detains anyone. Try to at least be somewhat honest.
I practice "catch and release" as well. But the bass fish aren't clogging up the medical system, the school system, the court system, ad nauseum.
What "proof" do you need?
hmm conflicting "government" reports..
Washington, some time in the future. WoC News. Surviving Minutemen deny having military weapons.
Bush Administration officials confirm the Mexican army's account of the fire fight between army personnel and Minutemen vigilantes that claimed the lives of Americans.
"Our joint investigation shows that 78-year-old Maude Fricket probably fired a clip of eight rounds from her late husband's W.W. II M-1 rifle," said a Bush Administration official. Mexican army personnel rushed to protect an annual gathering of citizens in Mexican territory celebrating hard work, family values, and paying taxes, the official said.
After the fire fight Mexican army personnel found Mrs. Frickert dead from wounds with her thumb trapped by the weapon's bolt. "She was trying to load another eight-round clip, a Mexican Embassy official told reporters "That's how we know she started it," the official said. . . .
No, they aren't literally allowing them to come in. But the BP is ineffective due to chronic underfunding and attentino from afar in Washington.
That is why the Minutemen were created; to serve as a wake-up call that if the government won't do for the people, then the people will do for themselves.
Yeah, that's my post. And no, I don't believe the government spin on this and never watch ABC.
But how does me believing the Mexican government come into play?
It must disappoint you terribly that no one on either side of the aisle who has the ability to actually DO something about this issue is suggesting exactly what you want done.
You said you didn't believe them. Now, that's either the WH or ABC. Which means you believe the Mexicans.
"I believe the Minutemen and Chris Simcox."

So far, me too. We will see what how it all pans out in the coming days.
I am still waiting to see supporting evidence that the news that you are a horse thief is false.
I stand behind the few that do, such as Tancredo and Sensenbrenner. Theirs are lonely voices right now.
