Party endorses lawmaker receiving drug treatment after Capitol crash
Updated: 10:03 a.m. ET May 9, 2006
WEST WARWICK, R.I. - Democrats endorsed an absent Rep. Patrick Kennedy, being treated for addiction to prescription pain drugs, for re-election Monday night at their state convention.
Kennedy checked into the Mayo Clinic on Friday for his second stay in less than five months after a middle-of-the-night car crash near the Capitol on Thursday that he said he couldnt remember. It was his second car crash in three weeks.
Republicans have said Kennedy should step aside because he cant fulfill his duties. But Democratic leaders said Monday night that he has done a good job and deserves support in his battle with addiction.

"I am Spartacus!"
"I am Spartacus!"
"I am Spartacus!"
I blame the moron voters who will re-elect this lying piece of trash.
Figures - the Dims in R.I are all pro-abortion & pro-homos.
Of course they'd back this like snot. How could they do otherwise.
It's amazing to think there are still fools out there in the middle class who think the Dims are the part of the average Joe.
What a bunch of a-holes.

Speaking as a former New Englander, and one who has purposely avoided any job prospects in that geographical area, this does not surprize me.

Providence Journal:
>>WEST WARWICK -- Just three days after announcing that he was once again seeking treatment for addiction to prescription drugs, U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy easily won his party's backing last night.
In a convention that was more show than suspense, the state Democratic Party gave its endorsement to Kennedy and a slate of candidates for other spots.
Even though Kennedy wasn't at the West Valley Inn last night -- he is seeking rehabilitation treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., after crashing his Mustang convertible into a traffic barrier in Washington last week -- he still played a prominent role in the night's activities.
Whitehouse, for instance, was wearing only one political sticker: "Kennedy U.S. Congress."
"There's only one guy not here," he said, when asked about the sticker. "I just want to show my support and make sure there's no doubt that I'm 100-percent in his corner as he works his way through this."
Political tenure.
Love that shade of brown lipstick they're wearing....
Now its addiction to pain meds. Thats not what they first said. Pat is lucky. There won't be prosecuting attorneys running through and exposing his medical records.
Yeah, well, speaking as one of the moron voters who turn out to vote against him every damn time, that's what happens WHEN NOBODY RUNS AGAINST HIM. Honest to God, there's only so much we can do if the GOP just ignores the whole area. Rhode Island and Massachusetts both -- the GOP has simply given up and left the field to Democrats.
Yeah, their chances of winning elections here are slim, but if they spent some money and put up a fight, they'd start to make headway. And maybe the next election, or the one after, they'd have a shot. Nobody's going to vote for a party that's signalling clearly that it can live without your vote, thanks.
Patrick doesn't run unopposed, but it's always some schlub nobody heard of sticking his hand in his own pocket with NO support from the party. No TV, no radio, I think I got a mimeographed flyer once. Guess how that turns out?
He is the cream of the crop in the democrat party.
The voters BEST CHOICE, sad but true!
Wonder if they toasted his selection?
He is the cream of the crop in the democrat party.
Houston, we have an echo in here.
I don't think Mr. Doakes would have been driven home by the appropriate police agency sans breathalyzer test.
