U.S. tipping Mexico to Minuteman patrols (telling the Mexican government)
Daily Bulletin ^ | 5/9/2006 | Sara A Carter

Posted on 05/09/2006 6:21:25 AM PDT by IrishMike

While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are. According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed.

"It's not a secret where the Minuteman volunteers are going to be," Mario Martinez said Monday.

"This ... simply makes two basic statements -- that we will not allow any lawlessness of any type, and that if an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person."

Minuteman members were not so sanguine about the arrangement, however, saying that reporting their location to Mexican officials nullifies their effectiveness along the border and could endanger their lives.

"Now we know why it seemed like Mexican officials knew where we were all the time," said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. "It's unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country. They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels.

"They just basically endangered the lives of American people."

"That you have no clue what "logic" and "facts" are?"

Pretty much not the stuff that crawls out of your orifices on these threads. And again, thank you for calling me a lair...coming from you folks...gosh, I'm blushing.

Par for course.

See Post 2056.

Of course, as one of FR's protected trolls, you can probably safely ignore that warning.

Let's face the music. The current administration will not do anything to secure the U.S. border. In fact, they will undermine any effort to do so.

You're right, and it saddens me.

Is this what has your feathers ruffled?
Defense appropriations bill becoming magnet for emergency spending
Several items already tacked on in both chambers have drawn rebukes from the administration. For example, both chambers added $95 million to the Defense bill for emergency assistance to the Darfur region of Sudan, where recent fighting has displaced thousands of civilians.
While Bush condemned "these atrocities," the Office of Management and Budget said in a Statement of Administration Policy accompanying the House version of the Defense spending bill that the administration already has $400 million available for Sudan in 2004, as well as $140 million pledged for Darfur in 2005.
A $19.4 billion foreign-aid spending bill, to be considered Thursday in the House, contains another $311 million for Sudan.

The Save Darfur Coalition
The Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (H.R. 3127 in the House, S. 1462 in the Senate) took a big step forward on November 18, 2005 when the Senate passed S. 1462.
I hope so 'cause all of this guessing on my part is wearing.

Can you give an explanation as to why this admonishment has been given?

The Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (H.R. 3127 in the House, S. 1462 in the Senate) took a big step forward on November 18, 2005 when the Senate passed S. 1462. It took another great step forward when it was passed by the House of Representatives on April 5 by a vote of 416-3. The stage is now set for a likely conference between the House and Senate to reconcile the minor differences between their two passed versions. The bill has drawn a significant number of bipartisan cosponsors in both the House and Senate, and it is of vital importance that Congress pass this legislation as soon as possible.

Wow... I had no idea Tancredo was so powerful that he could get 415 other Representitives to be as "obsessed" as he is...

Excuse me, but I have more interesting things to do today. Like re-organize my sock drawer.

Good luck...

In the first MMP project on the Arizona border, over a year ago, it was widely known that the Mexican Govt was informed of that project.

There were many things done for that project in an attempt to avoid an international incident.

Border Parol agents were re-assigned to that location from other places.
Local and state govt developed plans to do the same.
Mexico re-assigned military/law enforcement to the area.
Even NGOs, mainly south of the border, increased their presence.

This was widely known, including at FR, and was accepted as a minor fact. There was certainly no outcry or outrage over it.

It is only logical to assume that these same procedures would be used on any and all subsequent border watch activities.

The fact that this procedure was previously accepted but now is egregious is highly pretentious.

How can "securing the border seem to be a hands-off deal" when over 6 million illegal aliens have been expelled just since Bush took office?! At worst, it is it a "one hand and part of a foot deal".

Agreed - the location of Andy Ramirez's "Rough Acre Ranch" is not exactly "top secret" - I would bet it is even available in PUBLIC records. Good job last night : )

I didn't see anyone here "attack the reporter as some sort of NYTimes liberal ideologue." Also, if Mario Martinez violated any regulation or policy that would normally result in him be fired, then he should be fired. If he didn't, then he shouldn't be. Regardless of the high emotions of this case.

What were the crime stats in L.A. for May 1st? I was down on Wilshire that day, and it did seem nice to me.

P.S. - I don't have a problem referring to them as "illegal immigrants" either - at least until the law is changed ; )

Until a month ago, immigration wasn't anything I had on my list of top 100 concerns. Until the media started talking about it.

Peach, could this be because it hasn't yet personally affected you? Yes, the media sometimes jump on a story that helps to push their agenda and perhaps this is one of them. However, it's not fair to say that illegal immigration wasn't a 'concern' until they reported on it. It's also not fair to say that it wouldn't have been addressed had it not been for President Bush and Congress recently giving attention to the issue.

Why do you think a group of people got together and formed the Minutemen? Millions of people have been affected by the increase in illegals crossing the border. They see it as a threat to our Constitution and distinctly American freedoms. The kind of rebellious, pioneer spirits that revolted against oppression by the King of England are naturally going to fight a modern version of the same thing.

People have been patiently waiting for President Bush to show the same strong leadership on illegal immigration as he has on the War on Terror. They gave him a 'pass' during his first term because the WOT was a more important concern. They voted him in to a second term because of that proven leadership and because he had honored his promises during the first. They knew his views on immigration before his election in 2000 but thought surely after 9/11 he would see that the borders needed serious protection and more recently that amnesty is no longer an option.

FReepers have been trying to get an increased awareness of the problems with illegals for at least several years now. Just two examples:

Jan 15 2004 - Backers say Bush plan goes beyond immigration

Unauthorized Feb 22 2005 - Immigration to The United States [STAGGERING NUMBERS]

FReepers are for the most part intensely passionate people. It makes sense that they are not going to allow this to be swept under the rug; they're not going to let the media or the Left decide what's best for them. If they can't speak out about it here at Free Republic, they'll go elsewhere to make sure that 2 years from now we're not saying "Why didn't we connect the dots?"

Isn't that the truth. Until a month ago, immigration wasn't anything I had on my list of top 100 concerns.

I've been pissed about illegal immigration since Clinton was in office. I live in Cochise County, Arizona where the Minuteman Project was founded. There's a reason why it was founded here. That is because we bear the brunt of the hordes of border intruders who pass through our neighborhoods and backyards, trashing them, committing crimes all the way, as they make their way north to provide the cheap labor that the criminal employers are using. Our trauma centers are closing down here, OB GYN is hard to find anywhere near the border, people are dying down here at the hands of the border intruders, it affects us terribly. You must be FAR removed from the situation if it hasn't made your top 100 concerns. You and President Bush both.
