Nobody is blowing it off; but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.
The problem is that the ones that push these issues, i.e., immigration or, for instance, Terri Schiavo, don't seem to understand that their strident demands for all to agree turn most people off.

Your right about that. However you need to realize that America is pissed off about this immigration issue. America doesn't want to be Mexico. Do everyone a favor and instead of blaming the far right for being pissed(not blaming you, cause I'm not doing anything constructive about it either), we should all work together to force congress into an enforcement first policy. If they don't Republicans will lose.
If you really care what happens the best way to prevent it, is to somehow change the policy, and fast.
