Yes, 28 soutbound is a parking lot between about Westfields Rd. and I66 in the afternoon hours.

Today I decided to take 28 north to some side streets to US15 to I66 to get home. One of them was actually a dirt road (couldn't tell from the map).

50 miles, but it took only about an hour and 10 minutes and I'd rather be in the car for that long actually moving at speed vs. crawling along at 15MPH wearing the clutch out...

I worked at Dulles Corner--28 and the Dulles Toll Road--from 1987 when AT&T built the first building out there, to 1989. I remember when 28 was just a flat, straight TWO-LANE road. I used to stand at the window at work and watch the crews widening the 28/267 interchange. Fortunately I could back-road my way to work--a short hop down Centerville Road (also two lanes) when I lived in Herndon, or up Fox Mill Road when I lived in Oakton. As long as it didn't snow, I was good.

I probably wouldn't recognize the area anymore. All those roads were still just two lanes, or at most four (Lee Highway and US 50).
