Republicans hope clean precinct rolls will ensure true GOP election

CROWN POINT | When hundreds of registered Republicans convene later this month to cast votes on their party's future, it will be RINOs -- not donkeys -- that are the sworn enemy.
In political parlance, RINO is an acronym for "Republican In Name Only," a derisive label referring to GOP members with questionable allegiance to conservative causes.
The RINO label already has been used in the political thrust-and-parry that has had insiders buzzing for months in the run-up to this month's county GOP chairmanship contest between incumbent Chairman John Curley and challenger Rick Niemeyer.
The May 30 vote of more than 300 elected Republican city precinct committeemen will mark the first time Lake County Republicans will elect their own leader since Joe Hero, of St. John, lost two consecutive attempts in 2001 and 2002.
Hero had tried to unseat the long-running Chairman Roger Chiabai, who died just last month.
Chiabai long had been accused of subverting local Republicans and canoodling with the powerful Lake County Democratic Central Committee. After Hero failed to unseat Chiabai in party elections, the state Republican Party unceremoniously removed him from leadership in 2003 and appointed Curley the chairman.
