I'm a staunch supporter of law enforcement. Most are cool professional civil servants who provide an often thankless service to their communities. Adequate training and the incentive of professional pay (which makes the job more competitively closed to idiots) will go a long way towards preventing numskulls like this cop from ever putting on a uniform. Administrative shift to dog catcher is in order here.

The jerk who tased this poor lady probably wouldn't make much of a dog catcher either.

I rarely tell sea stories, but here are two related ones. I had shore patrol in Providence, RI. There was a sailor in the bus station that reeked of alcohol and was comatose on a bench. Everyone thought he was drunk. Investigations showed that he had been hit over the head with something and was robbed. He managed to stagger to the bus station. No one would touch him until the shore patrol came.

Story two: In a trailer park filled with persons that liked to party a lot. Read they would have loud, raucous parties with lots of drunks staggering around at times on the weekends. On Monday morning, there was a man lying in a yard with his suit coat rolled up under his head. Again there were strong fumes of alcohol. I drove by at 0700 on the way to work thinking he was drunk from the night before, and I am sorry to say did not want to stop and deal with him . It turns out that he had a stroke, and no one helped him until about 0900 when someone stopped. I now tend to investigate even if someone obviously has been drinking. (I have been known to touch a drop or two in my younger days.)
