I haven't studied it. Very broadly, this was the tail end of a series of large cultural changes. Government played a part in bringing about those changes, primarily legislatively.

Marriage between races has a long history and certainly doesn't require a re-definition of the very word "marriage." Any comparison to same-sex marriage is a stretch to say the least.
