When my son was 14 he was hit by a speeding car. I got a phone call (a phone call!) from a Montgomery County Police officer telling me he was being choppered to Children's Hospital in DC. Once my coworkers picked me up off the floor, I got into my car and drove from Rockville, MD to Children's Hospital - on I-70, the Beltway and then surface roads - in rush hour traffic, driving in the emergency lanes where I could, and passed at least one Maryland State Police car in the process. I also passed a DC Police car or two along the way. None of them batted an eye or came after me, which I was almost hoping to have happen, because neither I or the co-worker who rode with me knew how to get to Children's Hospital. My now adult son is OK - a terrific surgeon, a titanium plate, 9 self-tapping stainless steel screws and 7 months in various casts have him walking pretty darn good nowadays.
I suppose I could have easily ended up in a situation similar to this guy. Prayers for his daughter and the rest of their family.
