Uh-oh: Republican voters might just stay home in November
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | May 7, 2006 | By Charlie Cook

There is growing evidence that Republicans will face a voter turnout problem in the November midterm elections.

The GOP faces not only enormous misgivings among voters about the war in Iraq -- which amounts to 70 or 80 percent of President Bush's problems -- but also a combination of Social Security, mounting budget deficits, Hurricane Katrina, Harriet Miers, port security, immigration, gasoline prices and various scandals. History tells us that when one party is either complacent or disillusioned -- and the other party is highly motivated, agitated or angry -- the results can be devastating to the former while providing boundless opportunities for the latter.

Michael Barone disagrees:

"Somehow, despite all the discouraging news and dismal poll numbers, there are a lot of plodding, dull, dutiful people, too stubborn to take instruction from their betters in the mainstream media, who insist on going out and voting Republican. Hard to explain. But that's what the numbers seem to say."

Charlie Cook, a democrat,

Charlie is not a Democrat, though he used to be. At one point, he was calling himself a "recovering democrat", but that was before some goons in the Clinton Adminstration made some not too subtle threats to his family and livlihood. To be sure, he swims in the liberal sea of the inside the beltway crowd and reflects their world view.

But, since his business depends on putting together a reliable House/Senate betting sheet, he calls 'em as he sees 'em. I have made the mistake of betting against him. Case of the wise a$$ amateur up against the seasoned pro. You will ignore his comments at your peril.

His words are by no means a prediction of results in November, too early for that. However, if we're being honest, we all see the same warning signs. I'm mad. You're mad. Conservatives are all mad, and if we don't do something to turn that anger into something positive, we will take a beating at the polls.

It seems to me that the election cycle always looks great for Democrats, according to the MSM, in the spring. Not in November, but in May.

What does this tell you about delusional reporters?

Dream on.

And anyone else who blames Bush for the lack of Social Security reform really needs to look at the chickens we elect in Congress instead. Bush was remarkably brave to even broach the subject; Congress is short-sighted, with a perspective that reaches not even as far as the next election cycle.

What would happen if all the people united to vote in a completely new set of legislators who promised real reform, financially and politically? Now that's a pipe dream. And two thirds of the Senate would still be unchanged. Alas.

The GOP IS IN control. I ain't seen no veto and I haven't seen the GOP leadership try to control anything. So if the President and the GOP leadership are doing it, then WHO is going to do it?

The GOP is barely in control. The Democrats have had to resort to unprecedented measures to befoul and frustrate the good GOP agenda items while allowing the worst ones to go forward.

What we need are MORE Republicans in Congress, not fewer. We need a genuine filibuster-proof Senate majority most of all.

Now is the point at which true champions would redouble their efforts to gain ground, not lose ground in a pique over the inability to get the good work done in the face of Democratic death-throes sabotage efforts.

Will Republicans rise to the challenge and show championship spirt, or will they retreat into the shadows to cry and suck their thumbs? I can only asnwer for myself, but for me the choice is clear. Let's play ball.

bla, bla, bla.....If a majority of a district likes their Conservative, RINO, Republican, Democrat, Liberal, Socialist, Marxist, etc, then they will get reelected and if a majority doesn't they won't. The difference in Congressional District and Presidential Elections are that no one can vote for or against the other person's rep in congressional races. At the very, very most the Rats can increase their House seats by 4-7 seats. One of the reasons, everyone forgets about, why the Republicans gained in '94 was redistricting. Before '94 a lot of suburban and Rural districts were represented by Urban representatives even though the Urban areas had decreased in size. With redistricting there was a better representation for the Suburban and Rural areas only with reps that served their needs and not every inner city/urban social program.

>>>>>>>>>>>>...................
as a viet nam vet and swift boat vets supporter I really resent that remark, I worked and spent to get that traitor defeated. I am disgusted with the current GOP because of issues which I listed, and the open border issue is just too large in terms of the millions of illegals who will get the vote and will vote in the most marxist party we have ever seen..do you not see why this issue should be number one to conservatives?

None of us have to stay home. No matter how bad things are I'll find something or someone I can vote for. I have every expectation that I will proudly vote for Ken Blackwell. But my vote will never again go for another RINO. Never. Period.

You ignore this potential problem at your own risk.

I'm ignoring nothing. I will vote as I always do. What others do, as always, is up to them. It's their life and their decision on whether to vote or not. The "problem" may indeed exist but ignoring I do not with interest and some amusement that the Washington Post and others who claim to be the watchdog for voter suppression (read: positive GOP turnout) are already starting their oh-so-subtle-and-sweet campaign to attempt to suppress the GOP vote by claiming the House has already been won by the Dems etc. My 'dream on' comment is directed at those who are hoping this voter stays home (since he obviously won't ever pull a D lever....hey that rhymes!).

"think the numbers do support that the Dems spent less that the current Admin... "

"this is Debt as a % of GDP. "

So your memory was wrong,

I'm glad you're not so stupid as to deny it.

When you Dems get back in you can raise taxes and spend a small amount of the increase on reducing the debt and most of it on the usual wasteful stupid nonsense.
...And the media will say what a wonderful thing you've done.

Interest rates have been very low- it would hae been foolish to raise taxes instead of borrowing- but that's what the Dems would have done.. apparently to your applause.

When given a choice between turning the country over to people who are lusting for power and keeping it in the hands of people who want what's best for America

You've got to be kidding, right?

They're politicians who happen to be running as Republicans, not a bunch of self-sacrifing Mother Theresa's.

Life would be a lot less acrimonious if we'd all just acknowledge, on both sides, that all politicians are lusting for power, and that neither party actually wants to hurt the country. You can believe with all your soul that the Democrats' agenda will hurt the country, but it's a pretty big step to say that they actually want to hurt the country. They honestly think their agenda will make the country better, just like Republicans do.

IT HAS BEEN POSTED BEFORE,
Does anyone have the list of accomplishments since GWBush took office?

It is a fantastic list which puts it all in perspective.
People need remindng that with Demorats we get no loaf, with the GOP we have at least 3/4 of a loaf. AND we can count elimination of a few rinos. Whitless for example.
