John McCain Too Conservative for Ultra-Liberal New School?
Inside Higher Ed via Drudge ^ | 5/5/06 | David Epstein

Not in D.C. Anymore

For some students at the New School, in Manhattan, their institution and conservative politicians go together as well as Swiss cheese and peanut butter.

Bob Kerrey, the institution’s president and a former Democratic governor and senator from Nebraska, announced this spring that U.S. Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican and past and possibly future presidential candidate, would be the commencement speaker at the New School. Kerrey said the senator’s acceptance “is a big honor for our graduates and their families.”

But hundreds of students, staff and faculty members at the institution of about 9,000 students have signed paper and online petitions that seek to revoke the invitation.

McCain will (also) be speaking at Liberty University, whose founder and chancellor, Rev. Jerry Falwell, has openly expressed his opposition to homosexuality.

“Up until a few months ago, I was happy he was coming,” said Anthony Szczurek, a New School freshman. “I think the thing that bothers me the most is him speaking at Jerry Falwell’s school.” Szczurek said that he thinks it’s not appropriate to have a speaker that is hostile to the gay community speak on a day of celebration at an institution with a vibrant gay community.

Kerrey said that he considers McCain “one of the most important political leaders in the world today,” and that he “accepted our invitation before Liberty’s.”

The student demonstrations have been very respectful, the president said, noting that he fully supports their right to organize.

Kerrey added that “John McCain isn’t anti-homosexual.… He has not supported federal legislation” restricting gay marriage, he said. “We have very good policies that make our campus very welcoming.... I don’t think his presence subtracts from that.”

Some might not quite use the term "conservative" for Sen. McCain...

What in the world would anyone want to hear from McCain?

Interesting how former representatives and sentors from small states rarely return to their states after they retire from Congress.

You referring to Kerrey? He's so gone from Nebraska...just like Pat Schroeder who hasn't set foot back here in Colo. since she retired from Congress

Censor anyone who doesn't obey the homosexual? That's their idea of "free" speech?
(This is a college that would be close to Stalins heart.)

I think all tax payer funding should be pulled from these intolerant colleges. Unless you willfully accept all sin and degradation, you're prohibited from entering Lucifer's "educational" domain.

McCain should be proud of this. It could get him millions of new voters in 2008.
Heterosexual pride is a good thing. It's very pro-American.

with a vibrant gay community.

Homosexuals walking around with bacteria and viruses eating them alive is not what I'd refer to as "gay" and "vibrant."
Those liberals sure do like to play around with pretty words, don't they?

Georgia: You are right; he has been a stalwart on WOT; but I don't trust him otherwise

Isn't it comforting that all these students don't want to hear any opinion, whatsoever, that does not validate their own? The New College is breeding the New World, one which will make many people yearn for the Old World.

You can't plot him on a nice sane liberal - conservative number line. You need imaginary numbers to express where he's at.

Rem: you are so right...supposedly open-minded liberals don't think they can STAND to hear awful "conservative" thoughts (and McCain isn't exactly my idea of a conservative...)

No matter how much a Republican wants to be seen as "moderate", libs will always see a Republican as a "right wing extremist".

Political correctness was designed to outlaw any descent against the Socialist Revolution.
Hate speech laws would have eliminated the oppositions Constitutional right to speak out and defend their own beliefs.

"Educational" institutions today are a self contained Socialist environment. The students will be lost when they finally enter the real world. They'll be like fish out of water. It won't be about all about them and what they want anymore. They'll face real differences of opinion, something foreign to them.
