US President George W. Bush has said the September 11 revolt of passengers against their hijackers on board Flight 93 had struck the first blow of "World War III".
In an interview with the financial news network CNBC, Mr Bush said he had yet to see the recently released film of the uprising, a dramatic portrayal of events on the United Airlines plane before it crashed in a Pennsylvania field.
But he said he agreed with the description of David Beamer, whose son Todd died in the crash, who in a Wall Street Journal commentary last month called it "our first successful counter-attack in our homeland in this new global war, World War III".
Mr Bush said: "I believe that. I believe that it was the first counter-attack to World War III.
"It was, it was unbelievably heroic of those folks on the airplane to recognize the danger and save lives," he said.
Flight 93 crashed on the morning of September 11, 2001, killing the 33 passengers, seven crew members and four hijackers, after passengers stormed the cockpit and battled the hijackers for control of the aircraft.
The president has repeatedly praised the heroism of the passengers in fighting back and so launching the first blow of what he usually calls the "war on terror".
In 2002, then-White House spokesman Ari Fleischer explicitly declined to call the hunt for Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda group and its followers "World War III".
Look it up. If you are smart enough to be on FR you can figure this out.
Now if Bush will just stop with that "religion of peace"
bullcrap.
WWIV. Reagan won WWIII.
"United 93" makes that unmistakably clear.
Go see it -- unless one has an "anger management" problem...
Yes. WWIV.
My beef is with the writers of the French "news" article, not with the producers of the movie, which I haven't seen yet, and certainly not with the passengers of Flight 93.
The way they worded the article implies that the passengers caused the deaths of all those on board.
I didn't like that.
Yeah I've heard someone actually call the WOT "World War 4" for the very reason the Cold war was "WW3"
He wishes. It's about half the US against the jihadis, with everybody else (honorable mention to the Brits, Aussies, Danes, etc.) standing around looking po-faced.
A World War, in the sense of a war that everybody's fighting? Ha!
The world knows that no one can beat our military but our government can be -- and has been -- defeated. No more Vietnams! This one is for all the marbles.
I can't tell if you are joking or not.
But I won't worry either way.. it's OK.
Dozens of nations have been wounded by Islamic terrorism. The safety of the entire free world is at stake. Over 20 countries have pledged military aid to this fight. Our enemy is any dictator or people that do not renounce terror. THE WAR ON TERROR, FROM AFHGANISTAN TO IRAQ TO IRAN, IS WORLD WAR III.
It's about time Commander W dubs this what it really is.
God bless him, our troops, and our America.
Actually after WWII our relationship with France was best of friends for a short time.

My post was deadly serious. My grandmother legally came to the United States as a nineteen year-old girl. Many years later, by the time she had grandchildren, she would tell us stories of what it was like growing-up around Europe until she departed for our country. She always had cautionary tales about "Mohammadans" which is the word she used for Muslim people. She regarded them as liars and potentially violent.
The four of us grandchildren knew she wasn't playing around because as a decent Christian she otherwise never had an unkind word for anyone. She was the stereotypical tiny (yet strong) european grandmother who had a knack for fantastic cooking and showered us grandchildren with love. If the topic turned to Muslim people anywhere on the globe, her tone grew much more somber.

It's not that simple. One has to be a paying member of The Wall Street Journal Interactive to access full stories. I'll be darned if I'm going to post my password here, but I'll be happy to access the story to share with a FReeper who has asked nicely like The Invisible Hand has, as soon as I get a chance to look it up.

"If I am elected President, I will fight a more sensitive war toward terrorists."
yes it was DeGaulle
