FORT MEADE, Md. (Army News Service, May 5, 2006) – Army print and broadcast journalists were recognized for excellence in their crafts at the Defense Information School here today during Combined Focus 2006.

“The quality of work being done by our Army journalists is outstanding. They can compete against the best of commercial media and come out on top,” said Col. Richard Breen, commander for Soldiers Media Center. “It’s inspiring to see the products being produced by our broadcasters and print journalists.”

Presentations were given to winners of the Department of Defense’s Visual Information Awards Program and the Thomas Jefferson Awards Program.

The Army’s homepage, www.army.mil, was named DoD’s best flagship Web site.

“We’re proud of the fact that we can get great Soldier stories out to our audience quickly through the online method,” said Lt. Col. Joe Yoswa, director of Print/Web Communications.

Online resources offered by Army’s journalists will soon grow, he added.

“As we implements the CORE, or Content Online Research Environment, writers and broadcasters will be able to immediately post stories about their units and Soldiers on the Internet,” he said. “In a time when our audience is choosing the time and place they want information and entertainment, our Web site enables us to make sure our products are available quicker.”

Other TJ print winners were The Citizen of Stuttgart, Germany, for best tabloid format newspaper; Brian Murphy of the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command Public Affairs Office for best sports article; and Beth Reece from Soldiers magazine for outstanding flagship writer.

TJ broadcast winners included Army Newswatch for Outstanding Flagship Television Program, AFN Europe for best radio newscast, and Spc. Jesse Granger of the 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs Office for best television news report.

Under the VIAP, Staff Sgt. Jon Soucy of the Army National Guard won first place for news photograph, and Staff Sgt. Russell Kilka of the Army National Guard took second place in features. Staff Sgt. Brett Karpowicz received 3rd place in fine arts in the graphics category.

At last we know why the Dinosaur Press won't run the ARNEWS stories; the Dinosaur Press is afraid the rest of the country will just see how incompetent they are.
