Six months from now, one of the two major parties will celebrate success in the November midterm elections.
It looks now as if it will be the Democrats. They stand to win a majority of governorships, will probably narrow the Republican margin in the Senate, and could regain control of the House for the first time in a dozen years.
None of this is set in concrete, and the renewed concentration of White House strategist Karl Rove on the midterm elections illustrates the importance President Bush places on keeping Congress.

This guy doesn't have a clue.
1. Close the border.
2. Shut the border.
3. Seal off the border.
4. Secure the border
5. Deploy the National Guard on the border.
There, that sums it up.
Or, it could be a wash--no gains for anyone. The Democrats will "celebrate" the fact they've slowed Republican gains, Republicans will "celebrate" the fact they've maintained control.
Exactly right. Start with the Mexican border and seal it up tight with the National Guard until the latest technology can be installed and increasing the Border Patrol by at least 5000. It should be equivalent as the Coast Guard in its scope. Armed and ready.
lol....you are nuts.
Nobody cares about the borders. It has never been a winning issue, and it will not be one...except pehaps it may begin to be one by 2008 or later. But, not this year.
The general public does not care.
You know, I think even if they secured the border and then dragged their feet and jacked around about what to do with illegals already here, the republicans would still win. At least if they secured the border it would promote the perception that they actually give a crap about it enough to at least try to fix the problem.
Yep, and watch the poll numbers rebound. Too many of the GOP loyalists feel burned by this immigration fiasco.
Yeah, sure. I guess you missed the latest Zogby poll. Or recent Rasmussen polling on immigration.
You can deny the border is an issue, just as Bush is oblivious to the fact that his pseudo-amnesty guest worker program is causing major damage to GOP support. But the polling says otherwise.
Actually, there is no point even trying to craft any kind of solution for dealing with the illegals already here until they have massively improved border security. Whether we go for massive deportation or amnesty or anything in-between, they all will be ineffective until we control movement over the border.
link to the poll?
There is no doubt that people support stricter enforcement.
I do, too. But, immigration is not a winning issue, except perhaps in Republican primaries.
My local newspaper runs Leubsdorf on a weekly basis and he is not a tenth as smart as he thinks he is. He's one of those folks who thinks that covering congresscritters for long enough makes him smarter than the critters and the readers.
No, the best thing (not that I want it to happen!) would be for the Gulf Coast to get hit with a big fat cat 4 or 5 again. then, when the federal response ifs outstanding and the local/state response is improved but not all that good (Nagin and Blanco have surely not grown brains) the GOP can say, "the Dems wanted to still be having hearings about this, and the President fixed the problem by moving a few boxes around. Who are the adults here?"
